Can anyone tell me how their current experiences are with WebAfrica uncapped? How many gigs do you do per month? How does their throttling policy work? Thanks :)

Its unclear what the real world experience of their new policies will be, as they have just switched their backbone over to IS on the 27th.

The First day was great, I'm on 4Mb/s uncapped (Rock solid line) and was bursting to 530kb/s. However as I write this (+-10pm) I'm getting a max FTP rate of only 170kb/s (multi-session) and its the same story for streaming sites...forget watching 720p when its like this :(

Personally I pull just over 200gig, but according to there new star rating system I'm in the green (new system as of 27th)

All in all its pretty crap right now....hopefully its not a sign of things to come. The move to IS was supposed to be some sort of bandwidth paradise...well I'm still waiting for that world to materialize

Noted that IS had issues between JHB and CPT earlier tonight, maybe the links are still stabilising to normal.

Biased, haha :) I mainly want to know if WebAfrica considers 200GB/month on a 2Mbps account "too much". The 5GB trial I had with you guys in January was really good, but I know that capped accounts always perform better than their uncapped counterparts. And I really want to try the new IS backbone! Quick question; does the star rating "reset" every week, or month, or how does it work? How do I get it to become better? :D
I won't be able to speak as a normal forum member on the experiences, besides - I'm extremely biased :P

Our Uncapped isn't limited to GB's.
We implement a 5 star rating system which takes network load into account as well as your star rating at the time.

You can read more about our Uncapped here http://support.webafrica.co.za/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/760/0/home-uncapped-qa

Also, what kind of speeds can I expect if I'm on the worse end of the star system?

It's based on a 10 day window :)
200GB doesn't seem that excessive. If it is, you'll be moved down a star - which will mainly really affect your office hours downloads and things. After hours it should be pretty close to line speed.

Go on, give us a bash for a month :p

Looks like the network has recovered...back to full speed :)

@WAJeff I would also like to know, switching from current ISP at the end of the month.

But I asked for a test account yesterday, got sent details, but they did not work. Call centre said all test accounts were suspended and they could not do anything about it?

That's a bit strange.
Did you sign up for a trial account here http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl-trial/

No, I specifically wanted a uncapped trial for an hour to evaluate the latency on uncapped.

I got an account, but it didn't work.

Our internal test accounts are being audited - so that's probably why it hasn't worked.
You are more than welcome to give our Sales guys a shout as they will be able to match the experience on our trial accounts that I've linked above.

@WAJeff - Is buzybuy a reseller of WA? I signed up and got a username buzybuy.com******@wa

Cool, I think I'm gonna sign up with you guys! I'm currently with MWeb, and they manage the line as well. What would be the process if I want to take the package from you that includes line rental? Please enlighten me, thanks :)

Would it be possible for me to get a trial uncapped account, just to try the latency and download speeds?

in another post you said there's no windows yet here you talk about a 10 day window? a window and a star rating system?

whats the difference between a 10 day window and a rolling window. and a star system and 80/20% 50/50%? if you dont download as little as possible, you get shaped or throttled?

sound like your or IS are just changing the window dressing... because in the end its the same thing?

Well I've been on the uncapped IS backbone for nearly a month now. Best internet experience I found. (note: I'm not a heavy downloader so can't really say what happens when you enter star number 2)

So far never got any shaping or throttling even during peak hours .. and way better than Afrihost's capped account which is supposed to be unshaped... :(

Let's see how things go, but so far big thumbs up :)

Which speed are you on, and do you know how many gigs you need to do to be moved to star 4/3?

I'm on 4mbps... I'm very light user.. I'd say under 200gb per month and you won't feel a thing (but that's speculation).
