Ordered some gadgets for the first time from Amazon couple of days ago, loaded card etc and placed the order. But they never processed the card for payment.

How does it work generally?

For me, immediately.

Look in your order status, see if the payment has registered or whether there's an issue.

Recent order was Jan 22nd, think it only processed the 24th. Afaik I've always experienced a delay between ordering and the payment being processed. Kindle orders seem to be immediate though.

They usually charge when the order is ready for shipping. US stores usually charge you when the shipment ships. It's SA which charges you first and then later has to refund you because ohhhh no stock, sorry.

They may do a $1 authorisation on your card though.

Digital orders ship immediately. Physical orders take time to ship, I believe, because it was a trend I noticed for the last 20+ years was that for US stores, they would most often charge your card when your items were ready to ship.

They will debit your card once the goods are ready to ship, ie. as they push it out the door.
Unlike Takealot they do this so there isn't this back and forth on money if there is a problem.
Also if there is a problem they'll immediately release the funds back to your card.
None of this "credit for you at our store" bs.

Also if the payment fails to go through they'll send you an email and you can revise payment method.

Later when you actually receive your stuff, if there was a discrepency between what customs charged and they precharged you for customs, they'll also refund that to your card without you needing to do anything. You'll get an email telling you how much was refunded. This used to be rare but these days I get it on almost all orders. ie. they do not allow the courier company to keep any money, even if it 1 US cent. (yeah I get 1 US cent refunds sometimes)
