Got a doctor to write out a script for medicine in case my daughter's symptoms worsen .... how long after it was written, can it still be used ?

Unless explicitly specified there is no expiry date.. Take it to the pharmacy, if they do say its been too long, the pharmacist will fax or call the doctor and a new one will be written up

I would fill the prescription even if the symptoms didn't worsen, if it's a repeat prescription Dischem usually keeps it on file and you can pick it up at any Dischem nationwide. The medicine will expire well after the prescription. So as a "just in case" I'd fill it and not keep the prescription for months at a time. But that's just me.
Surely a doctor shouldn't write a prescription unless he/she felt the medication was necessary at that time?

I don't know, I am not a doctor. I have no idea of how they ought to deal with this. It was on a Friday, so maybe she was making provision for the child falling ill on a weekend.

They only keep it on file if you ask them to fill the prescription but do not take the medicine.

If the doctor puts a repeat amount (x3/12) then its only valid for 3 months.

This might sound retarded, but why not go get the meds anyway and just not open it? If its not opened and kept in a cool place the expiry date is still valid (which is not the case once opened).

Chronic medication can only be prescribed for 6 months at a time so I do not see it being longer than that. But yeah, writing a script as a Dr for something that might happen surely isn't allowed.
