So I went along to my local Telkom shop to enquire about ADSL, turns out my neighbourhood can only support 512kps at this stage and he wasn't going to give me any idea as to when the faster speeds would be made available. I'm quite a happy iBurst user but I'm about to get a notebook and the schlepp of buying a wifi router/switch and using the tacky MIS option is less appealing to me than the Closer/Do options with the free modem.

My question, does anyone have experience as to how long or what the criteria are for having your exchange upgraded? From my window, I can see a very large Telkom building on South road (near Overport City) which I'm told is like the central point of most exchanges so I'm assuming it's the little blue box down the road from me that's the problem.

Just be careful, Telkom no longer offer a free router with a self installation. They will only give you one if you sign a 24 Month contract with them. Rather go off and buy your own router than sign your life away...

Agreed with ^^^^

Don't just sign up in order for a free router - it is not worth it. After all, if Neotel do pitch up in three or four months' time, it will be easier to ditch Telkom if you're without a contract...

Besides, most Telkom-rebranded routers aren't qualitay.
