How Long Will My Macbook Pro Last?

I have 4 Sony Vaio laptops that I owned before going Mac, and there is nothing I can do with them - maybe I can give them away to a school for free, but they are piled on one another ATM

Oi... give one to meeeeee.... ;)

I'd say 5 years. Over the years you can still upgrade the hard drive to an SSD and the memory to 8gb RAM and I'm sure you'll get quite a long life of usage from it.

I agree with Synaesthesia. My biggest bottleneck is disc I/O. No newer laptop is going to change that. I could go with an SSD, but unfortunately I also have the requirement from work that my drive must be encrypted, and the only solution that provides adequate performance in that regard is the Seagate 7200rpm FDE drive. If someone brings out a 500+ SSD with hardware encryption built in, I'd be right on it.

My late 2007 macbook still going strong, added a 500GB drive and 4GB ram and use it for everything.

I agree 5years..

Off topic i have a Power Mac G5 2004 model that is still going like a boeing :) i use it as a desktop for basic stuff.. use my Macbook Pro for more intensive work, like gaming.. movie encoding etc..

All this talk made me nostalgic so I've dug out an old 2005 ibook which I'm updating and giving to my eldest kid. Finding the right ram was a bit of a mission but it fired right up.

Laptop lifetime is about 1-2 years, PC 6-12 months.
Apple Laptop might get you 2-3 years.

What the hell are you doing with your computers? I bought one of the first intel Macbook Pro's more than 5 years ago and it's still going stong. I only upgraded the 120gb hdd to a 500gb last year sometime.
And it's not like I only use it for internet & email, I run Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop photo editing software on it without any problems. If you look after it, a Macbook Pro, especially the new ones, can easily last you 5 years+

One cannot speak generally of the lifetime of a laptop. Only the average lifetime of a laptop. They can all break, so it's a statistical thing.

I read somewhere that 1 in 3 laptops have a failure in the first 3 years. I can believe that.

Computer last long if they don't brake.
The MacBook should last at least 5years. (this is probably the average)
After this time it's not that it wont work anymore but you might want to upgrade because of Software.

A new MBP should last exactly 42.

I would believe that too if that figure includes people dropping them, slamming the lid shut in a fit of rage (I've seen that so many times), spilling coke/coffee/tea/wine/beer on the keyboard, etc.
