In 2020, MultiChoice switched to reporting 90-day active subscribers.
Sounds like an act of desperation.

defined as all subscribers that have an active primary/principal subscription within the 90-day period on or before reporting date

It would be nice to have a genuine indication of how many cancelled since lockdown.

They can count it in any way, shape or form. Give us a sports package and we can talk...

It was unbelievably satisfying cancelling my dstv, after all those ridiculous increases, hours on the support line and wasted saturdays in the m/c walk-in centre. Freedom

And you won't ever get that.
In addition to bundling DStv Premium and DStv Compact Plus subscriber numbers together, MultiChoice also changed the way it counts subscribers.
Just like the SAPS with their bullschitt crime stats, they keep changing the way they measure them in order to make them look good.

The other channels subsidise the sport - they are able to sell adverts across the other channels - IIRC they did a study and they found that to deliver just sports in the way you come to expect would cost around R6k a month. And even then, people probably won't buy just a sport package, they will likely only want a SS1 channel or similar. Which would be even more expensive.

DSTV is the next Blockbuster. If they don't do something drastic they will most likely go under.

Although, them holding onto Sport by the short and curleys, they might actually have something to keep a couple of employees.
