I have read loads of posts and have posted some myself, after only a few days on MyAdsl I arrived at the conclusion that we (MyAdsl members) are debating amongst ourselves, to the point of criticizing and even insulting each other.

We should be posting our comments and the more valid points should be taken out and published on Newspapers and have open debates on radio stations so that more people can get involved.

We are a minority trying to get things right for the rest of South Africa, why not go big on this? Everyone will benefit from this, prices will drop on line rentals, on local calls, on international calls, etc etc

I have no contacts with journalists or radio dj’s but I am sure that a few of us here do have. Why not try and reach more people?

Ok, now one question: how many gig’s do you guys think it would be acceptable before the cap should take place.

I know that it should be unlimited but, for now, we all know that its not going to happen, so lets try and answer this and maybe, just maybe, Santa will convey this message across to Sleeping Beauty. Hmmmm I wonder who the South African Sleeping Beauty might be?

No asinine comments please. Like I said in one of my posts, lets be realistic. :o

30 gigs per month. That's one gig a day, which should be sufficient for most normal use.

Well i could use about 40 but i only have a 192 connection. On a 1Mbps i could probably quadruple that.
Oh and btw wtf do you define as normal use????

yeah - 30 gb was fantastic. For the price of what 3 gigs are going for currently... I would keep quiet then.

For my personal use. I could get away with 15 a month. However If I throw my Fiance's research work into that. Proberbly another 15 on top of that.

That would be if I stop controlling how much I download, get all the game beta's that I want to, Update linux. etc

Realistically.. Since My fiance would use maybe 5, and me another 5, would be a normal month

Yes I back that figure up .. 30GIG's would be acceptable untill the problem is finallized ... afterwards move to plan B ...

where local calls within a radius of 50 km would be free .

ADSL Installation once off R100.00 ...

modem included if you signed a 12 month contract

and a fixed monthy rate of R120.00 ,,,

those R120.00 would entitle us to use the phone To make free local calls within the specified radius, and to use the internet as we please

Why cant we get what we mentioned here? because no one will take this to the highest Authority possible.

After all Telkom can and should put something in place in 2 weeks, the infrastructure is in place.

C'mon Telkom,, after all we are not that bad, we can all get along, we can all go and post threads on MyAdsl chat in groups and learn from esch other ...

I'm betting on you .. so dont let me down ... :)

Things that make you go hhmmmmmmmmmmmmm:D

I need about 100GB a month down stream and about 80GB up stream. :p :D

I am what Telkom will call a bandwidth abuser.
Any thing under 70GB down stream is a waist of my time
and the fact that I ssh into my server allot and download files from it makes the up stream just as important.
;) ;)

5 gigs should be enough for normal use i mean email surfing etc
10 gig would be fine for gaming surfing email etc

30 gigs is fine for porn mp3s games surfing gaming email etc

OK, so looking at the trend of posts, the problem is not the number of Gigs, it's the price per Gig.

As far as I'm concerned, at an acceptable price per Gig, a pay per use scenario would probably be the fairest tarif for both supplier and user. The problem at the moment is that Telkom's price is not fair. If Telkom wants us to believe their prices are reasonable then they must submit to an independen audit of their costs.

Unlimited bandwidth, fixed IP's and cheaper access. Lets open markets, create jobs, use it as a learning medium, bridge the digital divide, start a legacy for our children and lets catch up with the rest of the international community.

I could state how many GIG's I would be content with for personal use, but that strikes me as being selfish.

What of those that can't afford access? Shame on you Telkom!

This is all fine and well,,, but lets pretend we a telkom for a moment, sitting on the devils thrown,,with one major priority-"profit" Im not sure if telkom think we are unaware of our comparitive value in terms of the rest of the world or if they think we are unaware or nether and they just dont give a ****,, ether way I would think the more switched on we are in terms of knowing the exact details of our comparitive value the better we look in making our case. Should we ever assume that telkom would listen or be intimidated by our cause then we would have to consider small steps and chip away at them slowly, if anyone has all the details at their fingertips they should propose a first step/goal of achievment, when the opponent gives a little hit them with more, otherwise we will be veiwed as a radical moning bunch and ignored based on the fact that our requests involved telkom forfiting too much profit in one go. Im all for the fight but it has to be something achievable to get the ball rolling or power shifting,, Why would they ever let go of the power they have? Im sure there are people here that can put something like this together and we could all chip in how many ADSL users are as aware as you are?

There is a large variety of ADSL users so 'one size fits all' is not a valid option, as can be seen when looking at adsl offerings overseas.

Telkom should offer different packages, example:
10gb
30gb
60gb

If they are targetting small business then a gig a day isnt much. I'm running adsl here at a non profit & educational organisation here with over 100 users sharing the connection, it averages about 5-10 people online at a time. I'm the biggest downloader but even if i dont use the connection we average 0.8 - 1.2gb down and 0.2gb up every day. Many people here use skype hence why upload is high.
So anything less than 30gb is a hinderance.

The per gig billing system is a joke, its far too expensive and they know it. They are in competition with themselves because of their isdn and diginet products.
If we're lucky telkom will make so much money with adsl that they will decide that increasing caps and speed will not create a serious dent in their income, in other words a few businesses cancelling diginet lines when tons of people are signing up for adsl balances itself out.

I think part of the problem is that they determined in the beginning how much they'd need to charge for adsl to make a worthwhile profit based on an expected number of subscribers. Once they get over that predicted number of subscribers, if they dont reduce charges and improve service they are crooks. It's unethical.

For me 10GB would be ample as a basic cap. When I had 30GB for 3 months and told the houshold to use as much as they wished no restrictions [to gage demand] useage peaked at 5GB and actually went down on one of the months to well below 1GB. 10GB therefore would still have that infinite feel that 30GB had. Another more important issue here which gets lost is carry over, if Gigs carriied over [as some of the new prepaid options do] the cap can be much lower. As a peak is just that, a peak and carry over helps to smooth the peak, so to speak.

Things like Triple play would obviously change all this , but ATM this isn't neccessary since DSTV more than covers TV needs. [IMHO]

Lets look into this analogy.

A loaf of bread is offered to village at a said price. The village next door offers it's people a taster loaf at half the price. So the informed few of the first village raise their voices in disgust, nothing is done. The village elders then decide to sell half a loaf of bread at the same price, as expected the few informed villages raise their voices and again nothing is done. Further on the elders decide to sell slices of a loaf to the villages, the slices costing twice as much now when making up a loaf. Hopelessly the villages raise their voices demanding that the cost of a slice come down, arguing to have the cost of each slice add up to the original cost of the loaf.

The irony being; the villages would be content with paying the orginal price; being back at square one.

500 gigs (don't laugh, there are ISPs overseas that have 500 gig caps and if we aim low then Telkom will bargain with us and we'll get less than what we aim for, so aim high and we'll get the best deal)
