What size data bundle do you need, to run wattsapp for a month( I'm not a wattsapp/facebook junky more as a alternative to sms) ;

and how much data do you need ; to receive emails (+- 15 emails a day ) (two separate figures please)
On a android/iphone when you finally say goodbye to bberry.

How much petrol do you need. It depends on how you use it. I would say a safe starting number is 500 mb.

Let's help you find your way....

With WhatsApp, you will be fine with 10MB a month, so out of bundle data rate at Vodacom is R2, so R2 X 10 = R20

Email is a different beast, because you get plain text and HTML formats, but a normal message without any pictures is normally 8kb to 10kb (I just opened my Outlook and checked the size in far right column).

So, in an ideal world you're looking at 150kb a day, but as soon as people send you attachments or nicely formatted HTML emails, it can get much bigger and not something you'll be able to determine.

Keep in mind that you'll also get charged for your phone connecting to the server to check for mail. Should not be much, but it will be a few extra kbs a month

So you should be fine with 100MB - 150MB data a month, and most providers include that in contract plans.

*Oh, the media bytes listed in that WhatsApp screenshot is mp3 songs and pictures that we shared amongst each other, so you won't have that. We're like a group of ten people chatting to each other all the time. Simply the best thing about my S2 phone. ;)

I have had my SGS3 since July 2012. I have not reset my counters. My usage has been 7.1MB total bytes sent, and 9.5MB total bytes received. Total of 1949 messages sent, 1804 received.

Remember that you can just receive email headers and only download the full email if it is important and you really need to read it, otherwise you can wait until you get connected to wifi to download them all fully.

Im new to Android, assuming the OP is on android, where is the setting to set only to download headers only?

Open Mail > Left button > Settings > Choose account > Scroll down to data usage > Size to retrieve emails and there are a few options

how long is a piece of string?
I'm a heavy whatsapp use and I use about 5Mb a month, as for emails i also us about 5-10Mb a month (though i only download the headers), but i use the phone alot for facebook and surfing so i use about 250Mb month
best advise i can give is try different adhoc bundles for a few months till you know, from what you describe, i would say 100Mb a month would be a good start

I probably need 300MB per month and I do all of my downloading at home over wifi.

Whatsapp uses nothing but facebook, instagram, internet etc chow.

Bookface is an absolute data hog.

When you buy remember to check the cost of data per mb and how long before the data bundle expires.

I've web surfed 7,6gb through opera mini which has been reduced to 1,5Gb in the last 2years on my BB; so it seems that +-200Mb would be enough? ; including wattsapp and emails;

thanks for your help;

are the Mbytes also reduced on a iphone/android using opera mini?

You can save on Twitter and Facebook data by using Tweetdeck instead as it handles both social networks without loading pics until opened. Installing Onavo Extend can save you a great deal of data too by compressing all incoming data. 75mb data could be sufficient for that kinda setup as that is what I'm using.
