I am thinking of doing Bsc in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science via Unisa, but have to start with a Higher certificate in Mathematics and Statistics. How many modules do I have to take during a semester on the above mentioned courses in Unisa

All computer science and applied mathematics modules have been changed from semester to year modules so if you want to finish in minimum time then 10 modules per year will be the standard.

The certificate has two semester modules so you will have to do eight year modules in addition to the semester modules at the same time if you want to finish in one year. Keep in mind that year modules can only be done from Feb-Nov not June-June.

Is it doable though to take 8 modules of Maths in the Higher Certificate

it doable though to take 8 modules of Maths so in the Higher Certificate
The certificate has three compulsory maths modules, four stats modules and two "filler" modules so doing them all at once would not be that challenging depending on your level of commitment.

Let's say I am taken for this Higher Certificate. What is your advice, how should I take the modules and when will I write the final exams for the modules?

Take all of them in one year. Exams for year modules are in Sep-Nov.

It's a helluva lot of modules to take all of them in 1 year. Maximum I would say is 5 (I'm currently doing this). You don't have much time for other things when taking 5. I have no idea what 8 or 10 will do.

The aim though is to complete the Higher Certificate and degree in recorded time

Here is a link to that specific UNISA curriculum. In total there are 9 courses worth over 120 credits which is a full years course load. You are only allowed to take up to 60 credits per semester. All the courses except STA1507 (24 credits) are worth 12 credits.

The following are full year courses which you have to take beginning from first semester:
  • MAT1501 - Fundamental Mathematics (6 credits / semester)
  • MAT1510 - Precalculus Mathematics A (6 credits / semester)
  • MAT1511 - Precalculus Mathematics B (6 credits / semester)
  • STA1505 - Statistics for Beginners (6 credits / semester)
  • STA1506 - Basic Statistical Computing (6 credits/ semester)
  • STA1507 - Introduction to Research Skills (12 credits/ semester)
So that's 42 credits for first and second semester so that leaves 18 credits per semester. This is enough to an additional 12 credit course each semester. Not sure how you will factor in the third course (maybe unused credits can be carried over to the next semester) so 18-12=6. 6+18=24 so if this is the case do 1 semester course the first semester and then the other 2 the second semester.
