Efficiency cores and hyper threading obviously need not apply.

I use the old tried and tested Intel Celeron 1st gen.

1 Core. That's all you need for shyteposting on MyBB.

Oooh, what are you doing on it that that is not enough?
It's a mixed bag but mostly between image processing and computational geometry. I regularly max out 128GB of RAM so need to upgrade that too.

Been wanting a laptop for travel but yeah it's been impossible to find one with more than 128GB RAM. Hasn't quite made sense to fork out R100k+ for a laptop I know won't cut the mustard

If it would pay for itself by having both, maybe having a suitable laptop as a second would suffice and can be used on home base premises alongside a more powerful desktop, to run things with lighter RAM loads concurrently with the desktop. You can then also remote into the desktop and have it do things while travelling as well.

Just an idea for you to evaluate, I am not an expert on the topic of your usage.

For gaming purposes I think the Intel i5 12400F for ~R3,000 makes the best sense.

Combine that with a MSI B760M Mainboard for another ~R2,000, and 16Gb DDR4 3200 MHz RAM for ~R900, and you have a SOLID gaming build sans Graphics card.

PSU is something that you should not skimp on since it powers everything and a kuk brand/components can cause you headaches.

A mid-range graphics card now is cheap-ish if you go for the entry-level RTX3050 or a used RTX4060.

Current dinosaur desktop PC is running Windows 11 Enterprise using a Intel Core2 CPU 4400 @ 2.00GHz (1.99 GHz) & 4GB RAM.

My Lenovo laptop has Windows 10 Professional using a 5th-Gen i3 processor with 16GB RAM.

Thankfully, I will be upgrading both to at least 12th-Gen i5 or i7 CPU's in the near to not too far future... ;)

Ordered this build for my 8 year old daughter today - she seems fascinated with FPS games now.

The dependable intel 8700 6 core.... really don't see the point upgrading to just 2 more cores, if I do at some point it will be 10 or 12.

8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency)
