As the questions suggests I'm talking about website like My Broadband that doesn't cost a user anything.

Do you personally think My Broadband is a profitable business?

Well does the couple of adds that is on the site actually make enough to keep the whole site running and pay everyone?

Hmmm, I would imagine so. If you look at the amounts there were accumulating in the community fund (which were only a percentage of advertising revenue), I would say that quite a bit of money is made from advertising.

So what is the ratio like? Say for instance you have a 1000 unique visitors a day what could you charge for someone to have a small add on your site?

hahahaha. yes it is very... :p

Aminda business is not about money. business is about providing a service and providing it well... google were without a revenue stream for 6 years before they could make money. ;)

Henry ford
bill gates...

all these guys provided a service or product that people needed and they provided it well... then money followed...:D

what is your website going to do for us?

mybb gives us a peace of mind. a place were you can share knowledge and get answers... myBB is the place to be...

stop thinking about money... some people do things out of passion and that's when money will come because things done with passion yield great results...:D

As long as you have enough bums on seats I suppose. There's another forum just started called www.bblounge.co.za, so maybe no space for a new one if you were thinking along those lines.

MyBB's running costs are upwards to about R30 000 a month because they host locally.

They use 170gig bandwidth per month (last time I checked?)

170 gig worth of bandwidth and there's NO downloads. I think the unique hits per day ranged around 55000 right? Haven't had a stat update from RPM in a while.

I have an idea for a website, but I'll do it for fun (hobby) and hopefully it will make some money. Problem is that I have no idea how to do programming, so it means I'll have to outsource, which will cost me money. How much does it cost to have your own website?

depending what your idea is you could use free utilities out there, it's always a good way to start learning. maybe find a partner who would be willing to help you for 50% of the company.

Thats why facebook (and many others) had 2 guys

I understand not thinking about money I was just wondering how a site like this can exist that doesn't charge any money.

If I was to start my own site and it starts to get busy how do you cover the costs of local bandwidth that's what I'm wondering about.

Thanks Acid that very interesting. You always seem to have something worthwile to add.

Its all in advertising, take a site like 2OceansVibe for example, they charge 10K per ad position. The sad thing is they dont even host localy, and then there is the paid for reviews that I'm not totally for. You can view his ratecard http://www.2oceansvibe.com/2oceansvibe.pdf

So it seems that there is allot of money in advertising online if you have enough hits per month.

you can make millions of theoretical dollars on the internet. just look at chocolate rain man

Also remember, there's surveys and polls that collect data. I'm sure rpm gets paid for some of them by companies who uses that research to market and/or improve.

Go download their rate card or enquire about advertising cost.

If you can get unique views on here he can sell advertising. Plus most of his advertising is on a rotational basis guaranteed x amount of views per month etc.

Only reason he can do that is because he have a consistent and growing traffic flow.

Originally he was sponsored traffic locally until it got expensive (for the hosting company) because of the popularity. He then moved overseas for a short period of time but then came to the conclusion it sucked donkey balls compared to be hosted here.

So he started selling some advertising to cover costs (I think there was donations at some point from the community towards the monthly expenses he had to incur for bandwidth locally)

Ask yourself this. How does Google make any money? They're just a search engine... there's no advertising on their front page...
