How much are teachers worth?

How much, do you think, should teachers get paid. How much would YOU like to have the teacher of YOUR children get paid, if you take the logic into account that a higher salary will draw higher caliber individuals and a higher salary will keep individuals more motivated.

I'm starting it off, simple. There are many factors that may complicate matters but I'll address that as it comes along.

Well, the first thing I'd hope for is that the teacher's grammar is correct - the correct title of the thread should be: How much *are* teachers worth? :p

I'd say R25k-30k/month, considering they do have longer holidays than most other paid professions.
 
the ones that want to help/guide our children are worth their weight in gold.

Shizzle!!! Concord!!! ... Fixed.

I'm campaigning for all teachers. Not just for myself. Anyway, I'm just a computer skills teacher with no formal educational training, although with many other qualifications. I'm also an Afrikaans boytjie with a couple of brandies in, so grammar errors are bound to creep in. I'm not good when it comes to concord. I however plan on getting qualified as a teacher. I already have 3 years experience in teaching.

Considering the responsibility they have in educating the future leaders and the long hours they put in, they shouldn't be paid anything less than R30k a month...

Geez, thats quite bad :( I hope they get a better salary soon! They are after all teaching the leaders of tomorrow.
 
Guys I think most people on here are on unrealistic salaries. I often get to see people's salaries and R20,000 to R30,000 is by no means the norm for the majority of the population!

Pay teachers these amounts and then what do you think school fees are going to be. Do you think someone on a R5,000 salary is then going to be able to afford it?

+1, but still, 8k is not alot for a person with a degree, or am I mistaken?

Usually a diploma and then as Picard mentioned some don't even have that. Remember most people get into teaching not for the money but for the joy of educating.

Ideally, yes, teachers should get paid a fortune to attract the best in the relevant fields but unfortunately this is not the reality.
 
Woah, i'd have thought about 12k to 18k when starting/pending school etc.. (and get paid for full yr or something? after all they prepare for future classes + de-stress) and more for rural places where teachers are highly qualified/experienced. Teachers with degrees + teaching diploma's should be encouraged more and get better paid than diplomas !

Uhm most degrees start about somewhere there last i check then again depends on region too..
