How much data used in google maps?

Im using my samsung galaxy J5 with google maps app installed as my GPS for driving.
Any idea how many mb's are used for a 30 min trip?

That'll depend on how far you drive in those 30 mins. The easiest is to go to settings -> data usage and have a look what Google Maps is using. Also remember that you can pre-download maps over wifi to save cellular data.

Noticeably different to google maps? I was always under the impression they got their route data from google.

Loading the map uses data, once loaded it should use near nothing, especially if you set it to use GPS.
I downloaded the maps offline and used the GPS system while on roaming overseas, worked fine.

Very different yes. In my experience Google Maps tends to stick to major roads, while Waze is very happy to take side roads to bypass traffic. It saves me a good few minutes to work each day by picking the road with the least traffic at that moment.
