How much do harddrive recovery generally cost?

A colleague's HD packed up and they already have a new one installed but they have lost some valuable data (pix, etc.)

She asked me to have a "go at it", but the HD is making a buzzing noise so it's clearly a mechanical failure. The PC doesn't recognize the HD.

I don't know HOW valuable the data is to them but I would just like to advise them on something. So if they really want a better chance at recovering the data, how much would specialised service cost them?
 
Depends on where you are. In Gauteng you're going to be paying a much higher price than say what we charge here in CT. Then again you can easily get ripped off in CT as well.

All other recovery service providers will generally be a lot more expensive.
 
There is a company in Cape Town called Intratec -You can expect a minimum of R2,500.00 for recovery from them per hard drive. if you send it to them they qoute for free and will mail the drive back if you decline the qoute.

What area are you in, JHB and Durban branches send the drives down to Cape Town for qouting.
 
Friend of mine needed her Documents,backups from her HD recovered..

Local (Mossel Bay) IT specialist...Think their business is called CompuCore
Charged her R900 to recover her data (80GB Hdd )...

I think that's very reasonable...

This would have been for a 'logical' problem most likely, ie the data was deleted, drive was formatted or something along those lines. Those instances are solved by any number of software suites.

When I speak about data recovery I mean for instances where the drive cannot be accessed, this is a totally different ball game. Thankfully these days users can recover their own data when it's merely a logical problem, there are good free and paid for apps. But when the drive itself is the problem then it needs professional help which, by nature as a specialist service, is expensive.
 
I sent a server to SouthBit for recovery. It was a borked raid array. They recovered the data, but I think the bill came to like 30k. Expensive, but worth it.
 
RAID is a different story altogether :) The complexity and the time to rebuild them drives up the price. Our RAID pricing is still half of what others charge and our success rate with them thus far is 100%

Like you said it's expensive, but if the data is worth the value of the recovery cost then it's the only option.

Busy with a 2 drive HFS RAID 0 that has been going for 5 days and still has 7 days to go. Start talking about a failed 16 drive RAID 5 array and then we're talking big project time.

Mechanical failures are going to be expensive to recover as has already been said.
I have heard that South_Bit were very good at doing the recovery but it is going to cost if it is a mechanical fault.

I would ask your friend how much they are prepared to pay to get the data back.

I sent you that client from East London with the borked raid 5, but it was only 3 or so disks :D

Yup I remember. It was a nightmare as someone had tried to rebuild it already and failed, making it hugely complex. Pulled through in the end though :)
