I think that's close. But I also think it largely depends on when and where they work. The more cars they look after the more tips they will get. I am sure some make near bugger all while others may not do too badly considering the national average.

I've seen people pay guards up to R50. And I agree it depends on location.

Just for interest sake I would like to know if car guards are also active in Mamelodi/Soshanguve etc.

I find they do a good job with mine, touch wood.

I wouldn't say more than R100 a day on average - more or less.

We shot a documentary in 2004 which highlighted beggars at Pretoria's traffic lights - especially around Menlyn (nowadays, I think it's mostly Zimbo's who frequent the intersections), and some cleared R4000 - R5000 a month. Often, they'd have 3+ family members at numerous intersections, and collectively, they'd make quite a substantial amount a month as beggars.

on big days, like bulls game at loftus or chiefs/pirates games, they make a killing.
They normally charge fixed rates (lol) on these days, R20 minimum, so if you can get 20 cars, that's R400 to the good.

A car guard stopped to chat to me today about my bike as I parked in the local Pick n' Pay parking lot. I ended up chatting to him for about 5 minutes (about bikes, he was an ex biker). During that time I saw him recieve three tips, of at least R2 each.

Just to guess-timate: If a car guard working this particular lot were to get say, ten tips an hour of R2 each (very low tip estimate, just to be on the conservative side of guessing), that's R20 an hour. Say he works a lot for eight hours in a day. That's R160 a day.

I think it's safe to say in a fairly decent parking lot they could make at least R100, probably R200, possibly more in a day?

I think it depends where they work, what time they're working and how obviously how much time they spend on the job.

If they have the night shift in a busy area then I think they'd make more than if they worked the day shift... In really busy areas at night I usually tip R10 as I arrive and tell them to look after the car.

I think the average amount is around R200 a day. Based on assumptions though.
