I was having a debate with someone earlier about websites, and something that was said had me wondering how much a web designer typically charges for a simple wordpress website? Literally the logo, contact form, about us, two pictures and one or two other info pages, (all artwork supplied by the client).
And how long should that take to complete?

It really depends on a lot more than that. The type of hosting that is used can change the price, also is he using a template or designing one from scratch. Generally it wont really be that expensive.

Its just the design, no hosting, no customizing, and he is using a template, so its really just inserting everything. He was told to charge R5000, and that just sounded a bit crazy to me, but maybe I am out of touch with prices.

All depends who you are using. If it's an established company with a good rep then that sounds reasonable. If it's a student fresh out of high school it sounds like a bit much.

Nothing more than setting up.

Thanks koeksGHT for the kind offer. Much appreciated. I wasn't looking for a website though, I was just trying to counter some bad advice that was handed out. This is the guys first website for a client. He has only dabbled, and knows nothing about html, css etc. I said he cant expect to charge what a company with a huge portfolio of clients and experience is charging.

Depending on size wouldn't say more than 10k and that's over priced, should take less than 2 weeks.

In reality, me (and propper developers)can setup for free basically and takes no longer than a few hours. It's dead simple, yet government pays 140M  need a few tenders

That's not crazy, that's madness. People are really over-charging with web site development. I know of this one guy whose charging R2000 an hour for a basic HTML development (just a basic HTML), which is just sheer madness, unless you are charging with client-side and server-side development and with a logo.

Depending on who you ask, it could range from R1000 - R140m.

If it's just inserting stuff that's already supplied then I wouldn't pay more than R500. A lot of basic hosting packages come with website builders that does it all for free.

I have noticed that some our partners charge based on how easily the can rip the client off ie meeting at McDonald's = R500,meeting in 20 seater corporate boardroom = R50 000 even though they are very similar projects.

IMO it is fair, if my effort will make a startup a few hundred bucks a month that's what I will charge them, if it's a corporate gaining more from it then they will pay more.

Charging an hourly is such a flawed concept.

Just because it takes me an hour (nothing can actually take an hour btw) to implement a clients feature, doesn't mean that feature costs an hour. It costs based on how much value that feature brings to the client.

Not even senior devs (at the big dev houses) are charging that much. They typically go for R1000-R1500/h. R2k/h for an html laatjie? Ouch.

Seems like I am really under quoting!!! :(

For something this simple, I wouldn't pay more than R1.5k.
