So we're driving along the other day when there is a little thump. My missus turns to me and says the passenger side wing mirror just popped out and of course shattered upon impact. I call Opel and they quote over r1550 for a replacement mirror.

I can get a replacement mirror cut from a friend who fits glass but it wont be curved.

Apart from covering the plate in tin foil and hoping for the best :D what alternatives am I missing?

Scrapyard.

I'd guess that there would be plenty Opel spares about. The glass is most likely the least of it, typically the mirror itself is attached to some sort of mounting device (to allow for adjustment) and that in turn fits into the front or 'shield' side. That's what your R1500 quote is for.

Just be glad it's not an Audi - you'd have to replace one whole side of the motor car or something like that. Those bastads build as much into massive pieces as they can... I'm certain they have an entire department devoted to making small, often replaces items into massive parts that need to be flown in from frikken Ingolstadt.

I wanted to replace the guide cover on my automatic (little metal part that the gear lever sticks out of) ...They quoted over R10k as the part in question contains all of the little lights etc. and associated electronics that show through it... can you just buy the metal plate that it all fits into (purely cosmetic) oh hells no!

I asked and it is just the glass - nothing else.

Try ebay. Got a replacement for the T5 (curved) that just sticks over the existing cracked glass....

same happened to me, I just got a piece of glass cut. The problem is that the type of mirror is different and you wont get the same viewing angle, but that is fine for now.

Go to a breakers yard and pick up a 2nd hand one for like R300 - R400....

Well I wouldn't know about any in PE...

But in Durbs, there is a place that specialises in Opel parts... B&O.... you can usually negotiate with the guys as well.

Get a pirate mirror from your local Marouns or BASF shop. Should be no more than R300 for the complete mirror with glass.

If you think that's bad... complete mirror for a W211 Merc E-class is about R12 000.

*my dad and I own a panelbeating shop.

I normally try these guys - in this order!!
