That depends on a few factors...

Is it on Auto?
Is it an Inverter or normal compressor?
Is the room well sealed so the AC can lower its power requirements when the temp is reached?

Yes it’s on Auto
Normal Compressor
Not 100% sealed I have to leave a small gap at my door for pets

There's a few websites if you google, but most say around R3 - R7 per hour.

The only way to get an exact figure, is lookup the cooling WATTS on the unit to see its maximum draw and then calculate that per hour given your last Eskom bill.

OR, get one of those smart plugs or devices that measures power draw and cost although by the time you've bought that you prob paid for a good 2 months of AC on all day lol.

Depends where you live and how much electricity you use per month. If we're talking averages In CPT you're looking at about R3.50 per kWh if you use 600 units of electricity per month, and an average modern 12000btu would use about 1kW per hour, so R3.50'ish per hour.

And if it rains for 2 solid days ?
Winter, jip, my system is to small to run aircon. If it rains for two days in summer, I dont need to run aircon. Even on the most overcast days, I generate enough to cover 70% of our needs.

If you have pets, you should consider installing a pet flap into the door (which you can now keep closed) so that there is no excess leakage of air in the room, which will improve the cooling / heating efficiency of your aircon unit.

I am going to guess around R4.50 per hour to run your air con

You can't run an aircon but it covers 70% of your needs?

Aircon/heater units aren't very common in residential properties in Cape Town. We don't have the humidity of Joburg and Durban in the summer, or the bone chilling cold that Joburg has in the winter.

If your aircon is running full blast for the full hour, then you need to think about sealing up or insulating something in the roo.

So... no don't use the rating on the back, that's the max it will take. Like telling us your fuel consumption when your foot is fully down on the accelerator. Just like with cars, your Aircon should not be running full balls 24/7.

Only way to know is to measure.

I If your are running a normal compressor aircon you are looking at ±3kWh.

This is a graph of my load with my 12000btu inverter aircon in the main bedroom running from about 10pm to 8am set at 21°. It runs at less the 1kWh. Screenshot_20231119_083558_Chrome.jpg
