I have a 1999 Toyota Corolla 1.6 GLE. The Toyota service centre where it's being serviced tells me that my V-belts need replacing, and it will cost (total - parts + labour) R2140. I'm your typical dumb woman who knows nothing about cars - is this reasonable? Should I try source the parts myself and get a local workshop to fit them?

Geesus,

You can pick up the belts for about R 100 odd each, maybe less. Should be 2 belts, one for the waterpump/Power steering, one for the aircon and/or Alternator.

If they mean the Cambelt too then sure it aint a bad price.

Edit: Ok I see it's 3 belts.

You can easily do it yourself.

If not the cambelt then they mad IMO.
The 3 "fan belts" are cheap and any old Mackie can do it

Thanks for the pic, Pitbull, and to you and Hemi300c for the advice. I suspected as much. I now have the part numbers and the specific quote from Toyota:

9936520970 - 686.42+VAT
S9904872P - 171.18+VAT
9936390630 - 313.04+VAT

So I guess I can try source the parts myself and then get a local workshop to fit them (as I said, typical female, I aint gonna be meddling about inside my baby's bonnet!).

You don't even need to buy the belts from Toyota. Go ask at your local midas . I know Dunlop a good make . There others too

Why does it have to be Toyota parts? Any Goodyear or Gator-back belt lasts 100 000 Km +

@OP,

Find a reliable/good reputable aftermarket service place or mechanic.

While the part(s) probably/possibly need replacing name brand agents are known to charge higher prices than the reputable mechanic centres.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the Randburg area who would source decent parts and do the fitting for me?

I've had good service and prices from Bosch Service Centers in the past.

You could also try Polo Auto Air. I've not had much luck with Bosch in and around Randburg. The one on Beyers wanted to charge twice the amount other places did for the same work.

Before you go to them get the prices for the belts from midas, autozone etc and compare it to the price the mechanic charges you for the parts. They usually add a bit of markup which is fine but just be careful they don't try and rip you off.

I got the parts at Midas for a total of R347.70 (hope it's the right ones!). Thanks, Lupus, for the mention of Polo Auto Air - they're just down the road from me.

I had a similar qoute for my 2007 corolla R2455 a week ago

Update: all done, parts for R347 and labour for R570, used Polo Auto Air down the road from me. Thanks to all who helped.

Hi guys. Got a quote from my local Toyota dealership. V-Belt for my 2007 Corolla costs R860 but they will discount it by 20%. Labour is R495 and they're also willing to discount that on the day. All in it's around R1166 or less after the Labour discount. The quote from the service department was R1700. So a rather large saving by asking for a better price :-).

One question. What's the typical replacement milage for the belts?

I don't know about the mileage but the condition of the belt will indicate if it needs replacing.
