I am about to buy a new car. If i buy in dec it will be a 2014 model vs a 2015 in jan.

What will the depreciation be? Worth it to wait the extra 6 weeks?

Will be a chev utility ute special edition.

So no brainer wait the 6 weeks

Not necessarily. If you do very high mileage, wait. If you do lower mileage, don't worry.

Reasoning is... a car that was registered right at the end of the year, will have very low mileage for that model year. Pushing up the value again.

Mmmm well i do max 800 a month. My previous car did 14500 in 16 months.

Don't worry then. When you do higher mileage, you quickly catch up with people doing lower mileage. With that very low yearly mileage, I wouldn't worry. You're going to end up with a nice, low mileage car, when you sell.

Be wary of price changes as well. I've heard of some stealerships increasing the sales price due to this.

May start negotiating during last week in December and finally purchase in Jan? Possibly cheaper price and "newer" model?

Dealerships have absolutely no influence over price increases.

It also depends on the make and model of your vehicle. That afects depreciation along with age and mileage.

Without trying to sound like a smartypants know-it-all and just to educate you, loose is the opposite of tight. Basic english skills boet, some okes will grill you for using the wrong words.

Yeah RObojedi, that what my dad told me. I'm going wait for next 6 week to collect Honda Brios. cant wait :)

Personally, I prefer to buy this time of the year as I found that the dealerships are way more open for some negotiation. The saving you make versus what you loose might not sound significant, but keep in mind that when you sell the car in X-years the total mileage will be a but more in your favour as the vehicle didn't really do any mileage for 2014.

Alot of Factors Go into the Price Dropping, For Instance a new model coming out drops your value yes but if the model is not really an new design but just the models made in a new year you wont loose much value, However if the Model is getting a facelift and noticable changes then you will loose a considerable amount in value on the vehicle...

Like if you bought the golf GTI 6 weeks before the Golf GTI 7 came out etc

Second as other users have mentioned is if your mileage is low it adds to your gain... and if you estimate that you will do low yearly mileage it will make the year on year drop smaller than high mileage users

At the end of the Day its about how urgently you need the car...

But I have learnt the biggest factor to a price drop on your value is if the new Year model is a facelift.

Also, Neat side note... trading in your car before 100K on the clock gets you the most value back for your vehicle thats why if you can afford it a 4 year payment cycle will cause you to lose the least amount of value on your car...

I can't see how the year model can affect the resale value. Even with motorplans lasting 5years/100 000km, its not actually 5 years but 60 months from date of purchase. So regardless, you still get 60 months of free maintenance.

A car is worth what people will pay for it. Not what the mythical book value for that year says it is worth.

Well actually that is not the best example, because G6 GTI's still ask crazy money second hand and even 'demo' ones at the time of the G7 were >R400k.

Maybe something like a B8 A4 would show how worthless the prefacelift can be (after the B8.5 facelift came out.)

Except that dealerships use that "mythical" book value when you want to trade your vehicle in. And in that book there is a retail and trade in value for each model year of each vehicle, and yes, the values drop each year.

I already have a deal with the dealer, he is willing to hold the car in his showroom dec and we sign otp now. So that way i lock in the price. But only get the car 2 jan.
At the moment i commute to work via bicycle.

I can wait....

"Loose" or "lose"
Does it really matter?
