2 page spread in a major newspaper? You know, like the kind that they do a coupla times a year about how to avoid hijacking, or information on AIDS or TB?

I'm thinking perhaps someone (or a group of people) should do a 2 page spread about the high cost of bandwidth (and telecommunications in general) in South Africa and how it's holding the country back. At the end of the day, the goal should be to raise awareness, and I'm sure once people see hard facts and figures in front of them more and more people will begin to put pressure on the government (or ICASA or whoever) to take serious action against Telkom.

The fact that the Citizen and the Cape Times have printed the Telkom/Hong Kong comparison is great, and I think we should take advantage of this opportunity to keep the ball rolling.

Those spreads are usually sponsored by companies (at a discount for the space). In this instance, one would have to pay for the advertising space. Two pages (depending on title of course) - around R65,000 black and white!

Sounds about right. I once got a quote for R80,000....cant remember the exact details though. Needless to say i shat myself!

Sunday times

I know of somebody whose child went missing, they subsequently found the child. Sunday times wanted R20 000 for a full page, this was about 18 months ago.

perhaps MyAdsl should setup a fund or something so that people can start donating to something like this?

To what point would this really help? I mean Telkom is part owned by the Government. The government need a gravy train to finance those mercs, bmw and mazda's. ICASA is a JOKE! So in actual fact, what would we as consumers acheived besides X amount poorer due to the REDICULOUS cost of advertising?

I phoned a major newspaper and asked for the going rate in the industry.

Single page color in a mainstream (once weekly) paper, R300000 per full page.
So double page colour is R600K. Big corporations get marginal discounts on a contracted bases, ie depening on how many times they will advertise in the paper over a certain period.

This is with a readership of over 3 million people though.

Hope that gives you an idea.

Cheaper to send an email to everyone you know - with an explanation of why Telkom sucks, have them put their name at the bottom and send it on to everyone they know.

bwahahah just had a funny idea.

What about asking google.com to put up a logo at the bottom with a big
"TELKOM South Africa SUCKS" or something?

I mean how many people see the front page of google a day? Let alone an hour?

I, like many others, delete chain mails and don't take them seriously at all.

We need somebody to deface the Google site and place that there! Even better: Deface the telkom.co.za site and tell the public what bastards Telkom are!

High-jack the google.co.za domain(somehow) hehe

All South-Africans would see it, and it wont hurt the overseas populations :P
