How often do you get new phones?

I have an S21+ that I bought 2nd hand, the owner had it for about 3 months and decided they'd rather go with the ultra.

It does everything I need, battery life is great so long as I don't enable 5G, the only device I'd consider switching to is the new iPhone but that's more of want than a need.
 
I usually opt for higher end budget phones and keep them until they break, my last two each lasted about three years excluding the one that was stolen.
 
Average seems to be around 3 years, but usually due to some event.
Galaxy S2 -> Windows phone after 3 years. Great phone.
3 Years later, Windows phone never got all the apps, and I think MS stopped support.
Got a Galaxy S7, which was stolen after 3 years.
Got a Galaxy S10e, then after 2 years I could trade it in for R1500 less than what I bought it for, so decided it was a good time to upgrade.
 
Got mine for 3 years now. Dropped it fully in a bucket of water in the first week and its still going strong.

The 2 year thing doesn't really exist anymore, most contracts are 3 years now. As even the cheapest phones are R300 a month
 
Used to be pay as you go and buy phones cash getting a sim only contract for data and airtime. Realized after some math that I could get phones far cheaper on contract than cash. So have been doing 2 year contracts for the last probably 14 years I think for me and the wife. Have now for the first time tried the 3 year contract to get a slightly better phone but am nervous about that as we now have 2 kids who use phones and we tend to pass our 2 year old devices down to them. Not sure if the phones I am getting now will last as 6 years though.

We used to get mostly Huawei devices as they where incredible value for money but have had to stop due to android cutting them off (Use apps that are not on their app gallery). Had an amazing LG phone on my last contract that my son now uses but they shut down so its back to the somewhat overpriced Samsung's these days.
 
I only replace my phone when it's broken or can't do what I need anymore. Having said that, the ear speaker on my current phone is technically broken, so I can't really use it for calls, but I haven't replaced it yet. I probably get a new phone every 3 years on average.
 
My current phone still does everything I need, sure a better camera would be nice but the kicker will be when the battery starts dying. Even then I might just get a battery replacement.

Quite the flipside for me.

Contracts have been nothing but a money pit and always get devices for less.

Also contracts with devices tend to force how I can use the thing I’m paying for whereas prepaid I can do what I want and give the excess I don’t use to others.

So 4-5 years on a device for me and then pass them down to the kids after a battery swop.
 
Ill get a new one when this one dies or the battery gives up...3 year old Samsung.
 
My P30 lite is now 4 years old.. Just moved over to a sim only deal yesterday for another two years.. Will probaly upgrade after 6 years provided I don't use it or it stops working
