It depends on the company.
but you will find things like laptop encryption becoming very standard very soon.
Include mobile devices in this category as well.

How on earth does your punctuation work? lol.

Hacking is very prevalent, and no, very few companies invest enough in security. Most company boss`s are still old school rugby-woodwork kinda people who think IT security is not essential.

But on to the question. What is hacking? By this, should we assume the constant attempts at defacing websites (quite popular) or the more sinister information security breaches. Another discussion elsewhere deals with the sale of contact details by Vodacom. That's the charge. The hack, in my opinion, could be anywhere between Vodacom's own customer database and the 112 emergency operator centres. In fact, it could even be completely outside of the communication realm. Bank employee runs hack to extract all Vodacom customers from bank DB, for example.

And I think that kind of thing is very prevalent and certainly on the increase. About 5 years or so ago I wrote a staff policy manual on it for one of the cellular operators. The hacking threat seems to be far more severe from within (disgruntled employees, short-on-cash big-on-schemes, etc) than outside attackers but that could well change.

I think the biggest outside attackers are phishers in the SA situation. If you are into a little bit of a coarse view on the subject with some extremely interesting links and findings, this Cracked article is a fascinating read.

in SA the problem is usually inside , disgruntled employees. are there any cases where an outsider does all the damage. like hack into gvt computers, etc. in 2009/10 i read in the times of a guy who was arrested for computer hacking made a deal but nevertheless was imprisoned.
