I was curious about an old car (mercedes E320) that I no longer use that is sitting in storage.
I cannot bring myself to part with it as it has probably been the most reliable thing I have ever owned.
The car is about 10yrs old and it's milage is sitting at about 340k. It was purchased from the service manager of a mercedes dealership (was his wife's car) for next to nothing & had done about 100k
essentially I keep it for friends & family to use when on holiday in CT.

In any event I found this:

How accurate it may be, I have no idea.

on a side note, subaru owners, your forrester keeps coming up on numerous sites as one of the most reliable cars of the decade.

A friend of mine drove a forrester and the reliability was kuk, eventually the thing smelt of petrol inside & out and had to be filled up every 150ish KM! IIRC the mechanic said the engine was out of timing and there was a massive issue with the fuel system, est cost to repair was +- 30k :wtf:

But I'm sure it was a rare case, I think the new forrester is amazing

Car reliability is very much also dependant on the factory it is manufactured from and service centres in the country.
I see A4 and 3 series is awful

I have been driving my Polo Playa for 13 years now. It is currently on 360k Km's. Never misses a beat. I just can't seem to part with It.

My Polo has always started every morning without fail. However next year she is being traded in for a newer car.

2008 nissan 1400,35k on the clock
never had an issue, except when the mechanic fsked one of the sparkplugs

though the old vw beetles seem to have an amazing reputation.
my dad drove one 800km while missing a sparkplug and stuff

Between the business and myself, I have owned 55 cars since 1966.

Best - Several Hondas, Toyota Corolla 1200 (wife won this one in a competition), Renault 16TS (1969), several VW Beetles and Ford Bantam bakkies
Worst: BMW 318ti, Golf Mark 1 (rustbucket), Fiat 128 (suspension fell apart). BMW agents are the absolute pits, even try and wriggle out of motorplan items

I sold a 1984 Honda Ballade to my friend's wife in 1990 for R 2000. She drives it from Newlands to Epping every day to work. It has done 605000 km and the engine has not been opened. The only thing that failed were the pop-up headlamp flaps

I have 1997 Toyota Corolla 160GLi. It has done 199 000 km.

It hasn't given me any problems besides being very heavy on fuel lately. I barely get 400km from a full 50 litre tank.

2003 1.6 polo classic. 310k on the click. No major repairs... The lightest car on fuel that I ever owned...even lighter then my citi golf that I owned years ago

Edit: did 790km on the last tank... Will need to fill tomorrow... Will take about 50 liters

Awesome website. Cheers for the link! :)

Got a pretty old Camry 2.2 with around 250ks. Reliability, thy name is Camry. Boring as dust but you get in, it goes. End of story.

I make the top 100 ;)

Notice one BMW (from a decade+ ago) and only two Mercs on the Top 100

Honda Jazz right on top. We have 3. I agree 100%. Not a lively performer but just goes on and on.

I've had my VW Polo 1.4 since 2010, it's got 61000 kms on the clock, and still drives like the first day I got it.

Might trade it in for the VW Polo 1.2 TDI Bluemotion, heard it can get 1100kms on a single tank!

But will first have to test drive it.

This site is so depressing. I really want to get a 7 series BMW or a S Class merc but everywhere I look the verdict is the same

Follow your heart, buy the car you want.

We're only here for a short while, you might as well enjoy it. ;)

Our priorities are different, I want to spend R4000 a month max on my car and use the other R4000 on property. A car is just an expense, unless you own an Aston-Martin DB5. :)

Was surprised to find Audi rated quite poorly. I am on my 4th Audi now - in 12 years - and never had an issue with any of them.
My wife however is off Audi because of ongoing issues and poor service. So perhaps there is merit in the poor rating.

I think Audi is struggling to maintain their image, knowing that a lot of their cars are basically glorified VWs.

Nowadays it looks a bit odd to me when a big Audi drives past and it only has a 2.0 liter engine badge on the back. Somehow I still want to see 3.0 liter V6, or something better.

I find that odd too.
Mine is a 2007 model and looks like a tank. With a 3.2L V6. The way I kind of expect them I suppose.

Disagree on glorified VW though. The A3 and Golf mix match parts between them, but after that the cars feel very different. Well up to 2009 when I got my new one anyway as I have not test driven anything since.

I owned quite a few VW's before my first Audi. Natural progression and all that.

I prefer to see VW as the budget Audi. Not the other way around :)
