how safe is dropbox?

Some months ago there was an incident where anyones accounts could be logged into. Other than that I think they are quite safe but obviously there are inherent risks. At least if Dropbox is vaporized you still have the stuff on your pc if you sync everything.

How safe is anything on the internet? I just find it so convenient being able access the stuff from my home PC, work PC, Galaxy S phone, iPad, and anything else that is online.

Pretty safe, obviously sensitive & confidential docs shouldn't be stored there

When it comes to backups the rule is: two types of media and three locations. So use Dropbox as one but not the only backup.

Why don't you just create a few fake email accounts and invite yourself. He was most likely invited by a friend and now you want to steal his friends effort?

I don't want to abuse the system - Dropbox is a generous company and I'd like to support them by playing by the rules.
I assume he's already signed up. My link is for those who have not yet signed up, and don't have an invitation to take advantage of the bonus space offered by using an invitation.

If you absolutely need to store sensitive doccies on dropbox, rather create a truecrypt volume and drop your files into said truecrypt volume, which will then reside on dropbox.

That way, should some ne'er-do-well gain access to your dropbox account, said scallywag won't be able to read your sensitive and private information.

A reminder if you have a Educational email address you can get double the free space allocation for every person you invite succesfully. Up to a max of 18gig + the 2gig you start with free.

And that educational email address doesn't even need to be your main email address, you can still link the email educational email address after the even to get the allocation, also the allocation applies to all past invites you did as well. See https://www.dropbox.com/edu and https://www.dropbox.com/free

Wow - that sounds like corporate level requirements! Most people I know struggle to even backup regularly onto an external drive kept in the same building ;)

For us normal folk, I suspect using Dropbox is sufficient, especially when using multiple computers.

SpiderOak seems like a better but more complicated option if you do not want to share your data with dropbox employees.

If I had to use dropbox I'd dump all my files in truecrypt containers but that is not very bandwidth efficient.

Dropbox is definitely king for sharing of common files between workstations. However I would not recommend using it for backups as files that are worth backing up tend to be somewhat confidential.
