How sensitive are computer parts?

my fan clips for the cpu broke...i proceeded to to bolt it to the motherboard.seriously i did it last night, now the mobo is a bitwarped due to the pressure. All work fine except the pc runs for 30 seconds and then switches off........arrrgh heat problemo

ROFLCAKES

dude u shud start a comic strip! :D

I once killed a Socket A mobo on removing the heatsink. Those of you that had socket A mobo will probably remember that you needed a flatpoint screwdriver, half a bottle of Jack Daniels and some good nerve to remove the heatsink.

Well, the screwdriver slipped and I just saw IC's fly. I cried myself to sleep that night. hehehehehe

For the last few yeasr if I've needed to install PCI cards, RAM and do any tinkering the PC, I've just done it. I hold the cards on the green boards and the RAM whereever it's most comfortable.

The IT guys at work saw me holding something incorrectly and told me about the static and telling me how sensitive the parts are. They said RAM is especially sensitive :/

They have me worrying whenever I see something out of 'anti static sleeves' and stuff :/

Have I been lucky over the past few years? Or are these things really as sensitive as they made out?

I'm handling everything like a bomb right now ... very carefully.

Carry on doing it. It's the safest way. Electronics, at least with PC components, are very much more reliant today due to design changes of the "chips". Yet it is not really totally imune, so care is the best way to proceed. All to do is to make sure you are "discharged" by touching a grounded product (steel of course) like a PC chassis rear while plugged in. As simple as that. Remember static is coming fast (Winter)

Well , i had an old pc, so one day i switched it on and got it running, i then took a screw driver and shorted out the pins on the bottom of the borad while it was running, the cpu, the ram, you name it, lots of sparks but the stupid thing wouldnt even die.

it's strange... when you're rough with the parts, they never break. when you try to be as gentle as possible, they f***-out real quickly.

best is to handle them how you would a woman - with a firm hand, but loving touch

LOL!
