I've only got a basic knowledge of these things so here goes, I hope this makes sense...

We had a network installed in our apartment block yesterday and I need a bit of help accessing my access point to add Unotelly DNS settings.

My understanding is that we have a central modem on the top floor and 10 x access points, one for each apartment.

So in my apartment I have a D-link DAP 1360 and the SSID is the number of my flat.

Now when I type in 168.192.1.1 to try and access this D-link AP, I get a landing page for what I assume is the central modem on the top floor as the landing page is for 'AR Web Platform' and the name Huawei is there too. Would this be the case? I've got a D-link modem/router at home and it's not the usual D-link page.

So can anyone tell me how I get into the D-link AP in my apartment so I can change the DNS settings without affecting anyone else on the network?

It would probably be easier to set the DNS on the device you are going to use Unotelly on :)\

You won't be able to access the D-Link due to the fact that its in AP mode. Its not addressable by clients, it acts as an intermediary.

Ah, bummer. Thanks for that though. It was for a NowTV box (Roku) so no chance to enter settings on device.

Looks like I'm still watching on my laptop :)

You can do this http://www.7tutorials.com/how-turn-your-windows-81-laptop-wifi-access-point

Just go out and grab the cheapest wifi dongle you can find.

Your laptop's internal wifi adaptor will then connect to the access point while the dongle will broadcast a virtual Wiifi network which you can configure the DNS settings for and allow the Roku to connect to. :)

So you will end up with AP <---> Laptop <----> Roku

Since you can't set the DNS on your Roku, another alternative (Providing the AP is connected to router via cable and not just acting as a repeater and you have the IP and login details) is to disconnect it from the main router and then login to the AP and set DNS.

Not sure about your specific model but most of them can have a manual DNS and get IP, subnet and gateway via DHCP.

Getting the IP address for the AP is not that hard but do you have the password?

--------------------------------

If the AP is only getting DHCP from the main router, you can reset it, connect to it via cable, enter dns settings, turn DHCP off and set DHCP server back to the IP address of the main router and then all should be well.

I'm a bit wary of starting to muck about with the thing because we just got it installed, but The other idea I've had is that because we are a group of ex-pats and we are renting the whole block, is to put the Unotelly settings directly into modem so they work for all of us.

I wonder if that would work?

It would :)

Nice one, that's what I'll try then.

I'm in Oman btw. It's kind of remote but only a short drive to Dubai etc :)
