Any help appreciated!
I effectively have a 2 network (2 router) setup. I'm aware of double natting with this setup, but so far everything has been working great. I have no issues streaming media, Plex or online gaming, with some exceptions. However there some things that are broken that I want to try to fix. Here is my setup:
Dlink router IP 192.168.0.1 (in the office)
DHCP enabled, giving IP's to devices in 192.168.0.x range
Wireless disabled
Fibre ONT into WAN port;
PPPoE enabled, hosting internet gateway
Lan 1: Plex media server PC 192.168.0.139
Lan 2: Netgear R7800 (DDWRT flashed) 192.168.0.119
Netgear R7800 IP 192.168.1.1 (internal IP) 192.168.119 (external IP)(in the house)
DHCP enabled, giving IP's to devices in 192.168.1.x range
Wireless enabled
Dlink Lan 2 into WAN port;
Operating in DDWRT gateway mode
Various devices connected via lan and wireless - AppleTV, Roku, PS4, Sonos speakers, Google home mini's, Denon Receiver, various tablets and cellphones
I have used this setup like this because the Netgear has a special routing setup that DDWRT allows, creating 2 wireless networks - one normal network that allow internet access, and another that acts as a VPN client, with encryption / decryption done by the router. This enables me to let devices that need to connect to USA servers via the VPN when streaming switch back to normal internet for local apps and content simply by swapping wifi SSID's, without having to change any DNS settings on the devices.
The problem I have is that devices connected to the dlink router cannot communicate with devices on the Netgear main network. As most of the wifi speakers are connected to the Netgear router, when I'm in the office and my cellphone connect to the dlink router, I lose all access to Airplay speakers, Chromecast devices and speakers etc in the house. Hence why I have disabled the wireless on the dlink to force my cell to stay on the Netgear router, but the signal is weak and often drops.
Problem:
How do I get devices on the 192.168.1.x network to see and freely communicate with devices on the 192.168.0.x network? I know this is possible because my Plex server is on 192.168.0.145, and all my devices on 192.168.1.x can easily see the server, and establish a secure connection to it as if it was on a local network (which it is, just another subnet?). But only Plex can do this, no other service works like this.
Things I've tried:
1. Putting the Netgear router in the Dlink DMZ (IP 192.168.0.119). This didn't have any impact.
2. Creating a static route in the dlink setup:
Destination network
192.168.1.0
Destination netmask
255.255.255.0
Gateway
192.168.0.119
After this I could ping devices from 192.168.0.x on 192.168.1.x, but I wasn't able to pick up any players or cast to any speakers.
3. Enable RIP routing on the dlink. I can't enable RIP routing on the Netgear, as it's operating in gateway mode. The DDWRT setting can be changed to Routing + RIP, but then you lose internet access on all the Netgear linked devices.
Any pointers or info would be appreciated!
PS I think it can be solve to just buy a 4 port switch, and then connect the fiber ONT and both routers to the switch, but I want to try to solve this without it, it must be possible if the Plex service easily works like that?
