I should make a thread called "How to FIX an Nvidia card"
My old 5600XT 256mb started giving hassles and was all fussy on the screen. So I attacked it with a soldering iron back in '05...
It's STILL up and running in my mate's machine with this bad ass capacitor "modded" onto the card

*I think his "friend" was just testing how gullible this poor guy was.
"I recently purchased a 24" LCD, but my card wasn't powerful enough to run games at native resolution. My friend told me to measure 19" from the top left corner to the bottom right corner and then cut horizontally and vertically at that point to get reduce the resolution of the monitor. Now it doesn't work."

Mustek/Mecer had a VESA video card on display - broken in 3 - and the customer (according to them) tried to swap it under warranty 
I think Vern was the "friend" in both cases
