How to clean an oriental rug?

I've been quoted R1200 to clean my turkish oriental rug. Is it worth spending that much or should I clean it myself, if yes, how?

Youtube would probably be a good place to start looking for ideas. I've seen people pressure cleaning rugs but I don't know if that's potentially damaging to an expensive rug?

Or by my dry cleaner they rent out carpet cleaner machines.

It's silk. With kids in the house, I would prefer a DIY solution rather than having it professionally cleaned every year.

Silk - I'd get it professionally cleaned.

I'd also be very careful who you use to clean it, make sure you get someone familiar with silk...

If it was wool, I'd go diy., Silk - heck no.

There used to be a company called Lidchi who specialised in bespoke persians but I don't see them around anymore although there's a Vernonica Lidchi - she might be related so I would try her.

Silk? Don't. You can't steam it and you can't use a wet vac.

Get it cleaned professionally, roll it up, and pack it away. That way you don't have to get it cleaned annually.
