How to connect earth on Cat5e FTP plug?

How does one make sure that a Cat5e ground tab makes contact with the cable earth when crimping one's own cables?

I'm using Linkbasic RJ45 FTP passthrough plugs and the grounding tab is inside the plug on one side. Overseas they wrap a self-adhesive copper strip around the cable before crimping but I can't find the copper tape locally.

Example of the tape method.

 
Peel the foil back, wrap the drain wire around it. Stuff all that in and when you crimp the 2 flaps hold everything together

This. Wrap the ground wire around the cable and wrap that with a strip of alu foil if you want.
 
And this is how you destroy These guys... in stead of losing a single port you now lose everything.
Your R100k switch would hopefully be insured. If you lose everything, you're covered as that's clearly electrical surge. If you lose one or two... well good luck claiming from insurance. Trusting that switch with one or two faulty ports... no thanks.

We lost 2 to3 of those a week... Insurance is not the problem, Replacing them fast enough is.
 
Are you saying that connecting the earth could risk damage to your switch?
When Lightning Strikes hell Yes. But then we had a single garage full of blown equipment every weekend. Nothing survives. Fiber has made it better but we still lose alot.

For outdoor equipment like radios or cameras, online surge protectors or something similar is probably the better bet if fiber isn't an option.

Edit: It's probably required that everything is connected and earthed for shielded cable with earth to be a benefit.

For most situations the Shielding could, Would or should stop the EM induction. Direct strikes between multiple buildings and sites running over 2K equipment is a Death sentence.
