Hello fellow linux lovers

My brother made the foolish mistake of formatting his windows installation. Me being a huge fan of ubuntu said that I'm not giving him a pirated copy of windows as linux is just awesomer and he really has no need for games, thus no need for windows.

He isn't very technicall with computers though and he has neotel internet, which I have no idea how to set up for him.

The standard ubuntu wouldn't suit him as it needs codecs, sudo's and programs to be installed for it to be of use for him.

My current installation has everything done. But remastersys doesn't want to produce worling live cd's for me.

So, are there any remastersys alternatves or any linux distibutions which have wine and all common codecs and drivers preinstalled?

Thanks for the help. I want to convert him, but I'm in cpt and him in jhb so I can't just do it myself

Just give him Windows. If he isn't technical then he would probably be better off with Windows :)

if he had original windows installed he should have a legal key. He should be able to borrow a disk from anyone else with the same version of windows & install using his key...

frozen.ice,

Ubuntu can be quickly setup with codecs and the necessary tools for your brother to enjoy using it. I have converted a lot of people from windows to linux and they enjoy the stability of it.
It takes a bit more work in the beginning to get it setup just right, but once its setup you dont have to look at changing your OS for a very long time.

A bit more work? I installed Kubuntu on an old P4 yesterday. I just ticked the proprietary software and download updates check boxes during the install, set up the partitions (I'd have to do this for windows anyway) and half an hour later, I had a fully patched mp3 and divx and DVD capable linux installation. What could be easier?

Now, I have punted Linux Mint for quite some time. I think that it is exactly what you need to convert your brother. It comes with all the codecs already installed and plays all media out of the box. It is more refined than Ubuntu, and it is based on Ubuntu, so you get the best of both worlds. You basically install it and use it, without having to configure a single thing, unless you have a GFX card like ATI or NVIDIA installed, but even that is easy as Mint will see that you have one of those and then prompt you to download and install the driver, the same as Ubuntu. See my sig for the link.

I did the same for my brother, after him breaking XP. At that time I had gotten rid of all Windows images and slapped it on there for him, and he's quite a noob. He had no problems with it at all and it did exactly what he needed it to do.
