How do I convert music files to MP3's? Which safe program is needed for this?

what format are the files in currently? are you ripping from CD? windows media player does a good job of ripping cd to MP3 format for me.

The files are currently on a cd and show as WMA files in the Windows Media Player - it is my music that I would like to store and listen to on my laptop when moving around, but I see the WMA files are huge.

Under the options tab of media player there is a sub tab called rip, there you can adjust to rip the files to MP3 instead of WMA

You can also try DBPowerAmp - will convert everything and you use plugins for those formats that are arbitrary
