I know it's possible cos my new notebook came with a bootable partition to re-install Vista. I'm trying to "mount" Ubuntu 7.10 on another drive on my system, whereby I can boot from the ISO image, can't get it to work  Any1 knows how?

I read your post a few times and cannot figure out what you want, so I'll answer the subject :)

To boot an OS, you need a boot loader. Windows comes with it's own boot loader, linux uses either GRUB or LILO. GRUB can be configured to boot different operating systems from different drives and/or partitions.

EDIT:
I think I know what you want... You want to boot from the ISO image on your hard disk (not from CD).

It is possible, have a look at these:

Interesting idea that:). What are you using it for like that?

8.04 will be out in about a months time (beta already available I think).

I wanna run linux off a bootable partition. Basically I wanna install linux from a partition onto another partition. Will check out the links above.

If you think about it, it';s a great idea. You create 2 partitions, mount Vista and Linux on em and you won't ever have to install your CD for any further installations... Will check if I get it going.

My notebook didn't come with a cd at all, just the bootable partition to re-install Vista [if required]. Before I installed Linux in a dual boot the normal on button took you to the standard OS while a "Lenovo Care Button" booted the other partition.

After I installed Linux both the Vista partitions shows up in the Grub boot loader. Maybe you can create a new partition copy the contents of the cd to it and add a line to the Grub boot loader?

Creating a bootable partition is alot of work, I attempted this with a Dell notebook at work, 2 days with the help of Dell Business Suport and it still didn't work, not worth the effort in my opinion, RIS and WDS much quicker solution.

In the grub menu list if you set up the partition like a windows partition it requires a bootmgr file and if it set up like a linux partition, then you need to specify the kernel location.

Any ideas which type the cd is and which are the exact boot files?
