Hey guys,been struggling since the 10th of January with a red light on my modem, intermittent service and slow speeds. I've called telkom 24+ times and all they do is reset ports and I can connect for a day or two. I've received so many ref numbers and incompetent lies that i don't know what to do. Even the tech that was here couldn't fix the problem. What can I do now? Nobody wants/can seemed help me. I'm a grown man and I'm about to burst into frakking tears here!!!!

Do you have a billion router? It's probably stuffed. A red light on a router sometimes means a faulty router.

Try drop to a lower speed profile if its a sync issue - it may be distance from the exchange preventing you from syning.
When its up check the SNR and attenuation and post them here.

Exact same boat as you! open up a support ticket, 2 days later they reset port and close ticket. all works and a few hours later back to where I was.

Guy called me this morning and said I must plug in a Telkom Telephone since I'm 3.4km from the exchange and that will fix my problems apparently. Hope it's that simple since I'm at the end of my rope!

Sms your 10 digit telephone number to 0123210212 and follow the prompts. Keep on doing this until the issue is resolved.

Silly question but do you have wired devices giving the same problem or are you only using wireless?

I hate to look like a moron but how do I go about doing the above (newbie)...

This is what speedtest.net gives me, my line is up again for the time being, but having had this problem for almost a month (joined in December) I know that my internet will be off in a day or two. Also, if I was a person who downloaded torrents (erm) download speeds are 1.5 - 3.0 kbps? VERY slow...

Haha, having the same issues at our office...it's month end and I dont even want to mention the hell that is going on..router also shows the red light...they have downgraded the speed, didn't help...reset ports blah blah etc and have telkom phones plugged in...still off...the poor guys in IT are getting a lot of flak and being vloeked at. It comes on for abit and you managed to catch up abit of work and then down again, rinse and repeat...infuriating. We have resorted to a back up Iburst account which is frekking slow but least we can work. Good luck, this has been happening for awhile now.

lol, better you than me! I get internet now, rather fast but torrents are at 0.5kbps. So let's get to the finality of this, would it help if I shifted my ass over to MWEB?

Lol..I don't know...I'm on 2mg line with afrihost here at home, just checked and my torrents are comming down at 10-15k, very slow but think I'm being throttled to shyte anyway and there are a few threads about people complaining about torrent speeds. Get tester accounts with all the ISP's and then decide I guess.

Lol, saw that one coming, I have friends who were with Afrihost and they got themselves throttled ten ways from Sunday!!!

OK so, I have a netgear N300 (DGN2200M) Router. How and where do I check the SNR/Attenuation? I know how to log into the router (10.0.0.2 - right?) but I don't know where to go from there.

Any help for this would be greatly appreciated - and yes I won't keep the rest of you guys from playing WOW. lol

@babyinateacup :p.

Once you login to the router, it should default to the Router Status screen but if it doesn't for some reason then click on it to the left and then scroll down and click on Show Statistics and then copy/paste that info in the popup that appears after over here.

Ok - what speed profile are you on ATM? If you're say on 8mbps or 6mbps change it to say 4 or 2 or even 1mbps depending on your SNR and attenuation - this can be checked from your router status. (you can call Telkom to do this for you some ISPs give you a nice web interface to do it yourself) You dont really want your SNR below 15 (Below 11.5 will loose sync) If your SNR is above 15 then the problem is somewhere else. Post your line stats here so we can check em out.
