How to detect wireless networks in area?

I've got a Linksys wireless PCI card which has 'dummy' software and a nice GUI with a button that says 'Site Survey'. When clicked, it - er - does the obvious & searches the area for other wireless networks.

The problem is that I've connected a new Linksys wireless ADSL modem/gateway/router thing and want to rather use this to search in my area. It doesn't have the cool software but rather an HTML setup thing - which can't 'search'. Anyone know to make this search the area? I read it can be used as an AP ... does this mean I can connect Ad Hoc mode too? Model is WAG300N ... any advice welcome! Thanks
 
There are a few programs I have tried (You can Google it and down load from the net):

Netstumbler
Sniffi
WiFiFoFum

I used WiFiFoFum on my LOOX T830 which is a PDA/Smartphone with a built in GPS, I logged the results and mapped them onto Google Earth.

Just in a 14km drive to work I plotted 63 wireless access points about 30% were unprotected.
 
So I need external 3rd party software? That's no problem ... just thought perhaps I was missing something with the Linksys :P

I looked at the youtube wifiradar clip.

As I understand it is illegal to jump onto someone elses wifi network and start using his/her resources for your browsing, even if it is unprotected.
 
yep - it is illegal - but surely dolby just wants to detect networks in order to test his hardware...
 
Yea - of course ...

I'm actually connecting to my own media streamer downstairs. The streamer picks up/connects to the WAG300N now - but there's NO notification of this. I don't have wireless icons, signal stregths etc to indicate - but it IS connected and working. I'm not sure how far my WAG300N actually broadcasts so I'm looking at testing signals, strength, etc and maybe lowering power. I just needed some diagnostic things.

By the way, anyone here a Linksys fundi? Why can I not find this product on the site?

I know most (all?) Linksys wireless routers use the same HTML to setup - there is no additional software (I think). Is there official Linksys software to detect? How do other owners do it?

Hi,

These programs are for devices looking for APs. Is there something the other way around?

DD-WRT firmware turns Linksys routers into everything you'd want from wifi.
Client mode, AP mode, adjustable power setting, etc, dont know if would work with a WAG.

As per my last my last post, is there software (even Windows built in) that allows me to see what devices are accessing my PC HDD?

It's on shared with unprotected AP (nothing valuable) and I know that a media streamer and 1x PC are accessing wirelessly. If I go to workgrouped PCS, I just see the PC. Anyway to check all DEVICES connection? streamer, PDAs, cellphones?
