How to do a good interview ?

From your thread title its ambiguous if you are doing the interviewing or if you are being interviewed

Then its not too difficult, if you are being interviewed its a bit more tricky i think.

If this is job interview you will be conducting, I think best is to have a piece of paper with the key criteria you will judge the person on. Assign weighting to the criteria and then score them. Back the points up by making comments on why you gave that score. The above will help when narrowing it down to one or two candidates.

Obviously you would need a list of questions to ask, while asking the questions, grade the above criteria.

As a tip, try get the person to relax a bit - you might get a better reflection of who they are if they are not tense. Try start by asking about their day - general banter. Ask them about themselves. The move onto your questions.

An HR person on this forum might have a much better tips then i do. The above is what i did.

Like Ecco said its good to give them time to relax a bit, you can give a 5 minute overview of the job role and company instead of hammering them with questions right out of the gate.

Also at the end if you have any concerns about answers ask them to elaborate, so you are clear on any concerns you have.

This is assuming you are not the first line of interviews as you are likely to waste time interviewing candidates that are totally unqualified for the position in that case I would ask them about experience first and shorten or lengthen the interview accordingly.

Give them a jar of peanut butter.
Ask them to put some in their ear.

If you can keep a straight face through that, you're a better man than me :D (We actually did this once during res-committee interviews)

I just work through their CV, from past jobs and experience up to current.
HR usually does the touchy "feely" questions, i just go about asking technical stuff, and seeing if their personality fits with the team they may be working in.

Whilst they may not have everything that the current position requires, I try look at how they progressed at other jobs to see their capability of learning etc.

technically, its also very very easy to spot a certificate whore and someone who actually knows what they are doing. Its when you reach the cert whore that you wish you could just stand up and end the interview immediately
