A large house down my road has a drug room, gambling room, bar, bedrooms with choices of ladies and a kitchen with local food options.

Now that's enjoying local at it's best. You pay upfront and get coupons for whatever you need.

I believe the argument is that our textile industry with our expensive and complicated labour laws can't compete with Bangladeshi school children that work for a bowl of rice and therefore the +45% is just to make things fair.

So then, just maybe - we need to look at doing something else where we can be more competitive. I suppose our labour laws make that difficult everywhere.. In addition, I wonder how much money the government gets from textile tax, so I doubt they have motivation to reduce or remove it.

Noted on the tourism. I guess it can't hurt to stimulate that part of the economy - go on a safari instead of buying an X-box.

Yeah, the thing is I don't know what kinds of things are locally made except for mountain bikes so it was difficult to think of an example.

I didn't want to come across as "we shoud", but rather, "if I want to, what options are available?". I totally get it if what your hobby is, isn't produced locally. But I'm also keen to try something new, and if possible support the local economy.

Why wouldn't it? If I buy something at Game or Makro, then the supply chain gets paid, irrespective of whether the product ultimately comes from Springs or from Singapore.

It's not just labour laws that make things complicated. There's a general cost of living that makes it difficult to compete on price with Bangladeshi sweat-shops for making clothing. As @rietrot pointed out.

I don't shop a lot for clothing, the stuff I have will probably last me years. But I have done a little bit of sewing in my time, and my grandmother worked in the industry. So I think I have an idea of the amount of work that goes into it. I don't mind compensating someone fairly for their work done.
 
Remember the discrimination against white businesses with the covid relief money?

Supporting local would be agreeing with that.

I just received my whole xmas gift registry from Amazon this morning, Jeff doesn't discriminate against my skin color, so he gets my money.

Not really. That was a government decision. You could still support a local white business even though they didn't get relief money, if they still exist.

Locally owned corner stores(good luck finding one)
In a lot of areas there are people selling food on the community WhatsApp group.

You could find someone with a good idea and give them the R7000 to start. It's not a lot of money but for a small baking, welding, sandblasting, etc, operation it will do.
 
Anyone bought one of the locally manufactured Mara cell phones? Or know anyone who has?

Wonder how those are doing.
