I don't have a computer with me, just got the phone. Someone with me got the same problem, he got himself a external SD to usb C thing, it works

Sounds like that English is not your first language...

Usually, it's the software interface between the USB drive and the Android OS that's causing problems, with the result that some software module locks up, and needs to be restarted.

As for formatting the external disk, I usually used the native format options in the Android OS settings under storage or similar.

I recently wanted to copy files from an LG phone and could not see the phone directory from Laptop, although phone connects to USB. Find setting in phone where you have to allow access, and if you restart phone access is gone again. Not sure about your problem.

Similar story, see usb, go to file, pic, copy it, go to usb, it is gone

I see about an adator needed(maybe), plug stick into adaptor, plug adator into phone, about phone type and USB types used. Not sure if size of stick can be a factor.
Not sure if this may be a selution, you will have to find out from shop.

Thank you for your troubles, overseas currently

Walk into any phone repair shop (or even any old-age home, because the residents at such facilities will still have desktops and laptops) and ask them to format it for you?

By the way, during formatting you might want to select NTFS instead? (Because USB memory sticks are usually shipped out into the world having FAT-32 or "ex-FAT" storage format settings by default.)

These troubles will soon be a thing of the past, so keep your chin up, @upup!
