How to get a phone line 'splitter' ready?

Hey all

Ive had my ADSL line for aaages, and have been too lazy to fix the main problem: Every time someone phones, I get dropped from the net.

I have installed the splitter like I should (i.e splitting the line prior to it being connected to the ADSL and home phone). However, the alarm also uses the phone line - and I have a feeling its connecting to the alarm modem when the home phone rings. This has NOT been split.

So, I need to split the line before it reaches the alarm. Its just a copper cable running into the house however, and Ive no idea how to cut the wire and convert it into a male RJ11 - if thats even what I should be doing?

Any help is appreciated! :)
 
copper cable into phone jack, then rj11 from there. dual jack, 2 ways out.

Ye the copper cable into phone jack bit.. Any idea how? Are there companies that do it, or can I buy the equipment myself? Its literally just the one cable so not entirely sure if it would be worth it?

it would probably be better to get someone that knows how to do it, to do it for you. or you can play around until you are satisfied. some people like to tinker.



doing it incorrectly will affect your adsl performance.

ultimately you want to use as few pluggable splitters as possible, each one of these degrades the line quality. stacking a bunch of splitters on top of each other is a big no-no. the pots filter is not a splitter.

so you need the copper wire, wired into a splitter, then add your pots-filter and connect the relevant phone or adsl cable. opening up one that works will give you an idea of how to do it. the covers clip off.

remember, each device connected to a phone socket on the premises requires a pots filter to filter out possible noise it can create.

for example. 5 phones + fax machine + alarm modem, means 7 more pots filters. etc. etc.

Each and every telephonic device that is. Modems have an inbuilt high pass filter, so it's okay to connect them directly to the line.
 
A POTS filter is a splitter as well.

Just in case someone new to DSL stumbles across this; connecting two telephonic devices to the two available ports on a POTS filter won't work (EDIT: if you've got a modem connected elsewhere as well).

One port splits and the other filters.

Not necessarily!

You get like 3 kinds of POTS filter/splitter boxes:
  1. Just a single low pass filter, that allow you to connect a telephonic device (alarm/telephone/fax) to
  2. Low pass filter with a splitter, that allow you to connect 2 telephone devices to
  3. Splitter with a single low pass filter, that allow you to connect a telephonic device to the phone/telephone port and a modem to the DSL/modem port <- this one is the most common, because it gets bundled with most ADSL modems
And here is how you'll make use of those 3 different POTS filter devices and splitter(s) to connect 2 phones and a modem:

Note: The alarm should be connected the same way as a telephone!
