How to get a Static WAN IP address

Hey there,

i want to setup up a server from my home pc but require a static ip for that, does any1 know how i can get 1 or is there anotherway to setup up the server.

BTW a real newbie to all this so i am sorry if i have posted this on the wrong section.

You cant unless you pay lots of money.

@ponder, is correct. Your ISP can assign you a static IP, but you will need to pay for it. Similar to VPN networks, you just need the moola to do it...

gathering you want to set up a webserver, so you can host your own website ? I dont think it is too expensive...

You can get a static IP, mostly from the IS based ISP's like DataPro but you woulkd get an expensive business package and they would put in a Cisco router etc... Over R1800 a month. A lot of the routers now support Dynamic DNS onboard, so you register at dyndns.com for a free account, and then they give you a domain name (which is static). Your router then updates them everytime it gets a new WAN IP and they link it to that static domain name, effectively giving you a static address to get to your server.

If you gonna host a website, why not just take out a cheap hosting package at a company like HostGator. Much less hassle and way more stable that relying on a home webserver (unless it is a project for fun)

I use the axxess dyndns. I use one account at home and one at the office and tis magical system automatically assigns me Ho**.axxessvpn.co.za and Wo**.axxessvpn.co.za easy no fuss no router configs nothing

If you are running Windows Home Server it will do all the DYNDNS config for you and automatically assign a XXX.homeserver.com domain, if you not using WHS DYnDNS works like a dream, the cost of a fixed ip really isnt worht it unless you HAVE to refer to an IP. also remember that even if you have a 4mb line you uploads ARENT at that speed so it isnt an ideal solution.
