I want to get away from DSTV and use an alternative method via the internet

From scratch, what would I need in terms of hardware (TV, router specs)?
How does the physical setup work?
What is the minimum line speed needed for good streaming?
Sport streaming? Where?
Where do I go for paid downloads of series, movies, doccies?
Any once off and/or monthly costs for above will be appreciated

Many thanx for any contributions :)

You'll need a service such as UnoTelly for starters - $5 P/M
A stable download speed of at least 4mbps and a decent uncapped or generous capped account.
Your router should be able to support custom DNS servers, but almost every router can do this.

As for sports streaming, if you have a friend who is willing to share their DSTV login details with you, then that is the easiest way to go, else there are a few sports streaming sites out there, I don't use them so someone else will have to help you out there

Hulu+ is fantastic, I'm probably going to end up canceling Netflix, its a waste of money for me. There are also services such as HBO go, Amazon Prime Video etc

I pay roughly R 300.00 P/M in subs for Netflix, Hulu+ and UnoTelly, but that will reduce by about R100 once I cancel Netflix. ADSL is about R1300 because I'm on 10 meg business uncapped. But used to be around R700 when I was on 4 meg :)

The variety, convenience and most of all, lack of obnoxious adverts make these services worth it :) Hulu does have adverts, but they're really not annoying, and they also have an ad free subscription now for $12 instead of $8 P/M

Ah thank you for that Segg :)
So do you hookup your lappie to the TV? Or router to the tv?

I use the apps on my Sammie smartTV but any android box or Apple TV or chromecast will work fine

Depends if you've got a smart TV, if you don't then you'll need a laptop or Roku or similar, the important thing is for the router to assign the correct DNS servers to the devices connecting through it, and that specific IP address are blocked in the routers firewall, or thrown into a static route

Hi guys, my Samsung tv is quite old, only have smart add-on via soundbar.
I want to cancel dstv and only use dstv now app, can I buy like Apple TV unit and download and use the dstv now app on my tv?

I'm pretty sure they won't publish the DSTV app on anything that can commercially threaten their core product ;)

Hi peyperj , if you use an Apple TV and have an iPad you can mirror the iPad screen via "AirPlay" on your old Sammie tv ... You can also use a third party app to stream from your pc to tv , think it's called air parrot
