I was planning to launch an web services related business in the Table View area this year, starting with 10-15 employees. What I need for that purpose is a highly available unshaped internet connection of at least 2Mbps, I am flexible on the exact office location. My recent experiences with Telkom ADSL and with Eskom make me doubt if this is possible in this country at all in a more or less cost-efficient way. iBurst has low coverage in the area, it's currently not an option.

I hope you guys can help me with some of the following questions:

- can I make an ADSL connection powersafe by using massive UPS or a generator? How can I find out if Telkom's local exchanges in this area have power backup (the staff in 2 local Telkom stores couldn't give me an answer)?

- does anyone have experiences with Telkom's Direct Internet Service (TI-DIS)?

- I would prefer to become completely independent of Telkom - are there any ways I could hook up to another ISP without using a Telkom line? Preferably an ISP that has several backbone connections, not just SAIX?

- Any other advice you have on how to get a highly available (an SLA guaranteeing at least 99.9% would be perfect...) 2Mbps link with decent international connectivity?

I don't there are any isps in the country with that type of sla...

Internet Solutions are an isp with multiple backbones.

Both MTN and Vodacom have upgraded their HSDPA networks to 3.6Mb/s and are unshaped.

It sounds as if you want to host a web server on an ADSL line. Don't!

Find a hosting provider and host your server there. They have all the safeguards against failure at their premises.

I sent you a PM regarding an option, however you are going to struggle getting that sort of uptime guarantee on ADSL in this country.

To do some load sharing on multiple DSL links, you can try this howto: http://www.ssi.bg/~ja/nano.txt
Your best bet would be to get DSL from different suppliers (Telkom, SAIX and hopefully Neotel in future).

That's not what I want, I have several dedicated servers abroad for hosting. I just need a decent internet connection with a much higher availability than I currently get on ADSL with frequent outages and powerouts. An SLA or other guarantees would be great, but I can live without it if availability, performance and support are good.

thanks, i'll check this out!
