Guys Ive got this idea for a website, kind of like a portal for the trading of industry specific stuff :) Dont want to be to specific...

But other than Search Engine Optimisation, etc. whats a good way to advertise a website cost-effectively?

Emails to people in the industry? Or maybe written letters? Not spam but just a description of what the company can do for their business?

Would like some brainstorm help on this one :)

Thanks, apreciate it...

Put the web address on all stationery like biz cards. Include it on every email and letter. Put stickers on cars. That would be a good start.

Ok thanks...

But I need the website to get national exposure to gain hits? For instance, I was considoring an ad in a trade journal, some banners on other trade orientated websites and then send out emails to key players in the market...

The thing is it's easy to get in contact with people offering a service in the market, but I need to get hits from people that also wants to use those services?

phone them......

Who? Where do you get the numbers etc. Also I personally dont like getting a phone call from people trying to promot something...

Phone them is the same as sending an email... The problem is I need to find a way to either get those email adresses (Without it becoming spam) Or get people to be aware of the website without this idea?

If you've not tried, Google Adwords brings in extra biz when I need it (Pay Per Click rather than organic search optimisation).

Hire a gaggle of scantily clad students wearing sandwich boards emblazoned with your web address at major traffic intersections

nice :D

also put the website link in your sig on all the forums that you frequent

and i think if you get another site to link to yours, its ups the google ranking

You could try a google bomb, but that's prob. not really ethical, I wouldn't do that for a business.

I didn't tell you to try this.

Hi SlyFly,

SEO (search engine optimisation) and PPC (pay per click) are pretty much the bread and butter of getting website traffic.

The only other more affordable ways are placing informal ads in places like forums (in your signature, for instance) and forming link partnerships with other relative sites.

Good luck!

A Google bomb (also referred to as a 'link bomb') is Internet slang for a certain kind of attempt to influence the ranking of a given page in results returned by the Google search engine, often with humorous or political intentions.[1] Because of the way that Google's algorithm works, a page will be ranked higher if the sites that link to that page use consistent anchor text. A Google bomb is created if many sites link to the page in this manner. Google bomb is used both as a verb and a noun. The phrase "Google bombing" was introduced to the New Oxford American Dictionary in May 2005.[2] Google bombing is closely related to spamdexing, the practice of deliberately modifying HTML pages to increase the chance of their being placed close to the beginning of search engine results, or to influence the category to which the page is assigned in a misleading or dishonest manner.
