How to get the light like the shot?

IMO that foto is shoped

could be wrong but I don't think so
 
This can be done without Photoshop. For that shot, you might need to push a the ISO to about 400 and use an off-shoe flash behind the subject. The red, well, I suspect that is ambient light.

For starters, you need an active volcano so you have the sulphur and ash/mist in the air necessary for the intense orange light.
Then you need powerful enough light behind your subject that it can overpower the light cast by the lava.

Photoshop has nothing to do with it, even if it's in the EXIF data. I could go process a raw file and immediately save it to jpeg, using PS, and it would get included in the EXIF. That wouldn't mean I had used photoshop to do any editing of the image.

This is why the distinction between editing and processing is important, kids.

So kiddy how do you know what exactly was done with the photoshop? Hmmm?
 
the light behind the guy is very doable with off camera flash and just balancing the settings, however i do believe the rest of the photo was shopped.
 
and the lightsource behind the guy seems to be coming out of a doorway and a doorway in the middle of nowhere? i doubt it ...

To replicate the effect, take a powerful light source that you're diffusing well. That light source has an orange gel/light colour modifier. Now place it behind something on a stage. Fill the stage with smoke from a smoke generator. Place a white light source such as a flash behind the person being photographed. Tada, replicated.

You're only proving you don't know how light modifiers work. You can replicate THAT effect using a softbox.

Because I've seen similar photos from a friend that lives in hawaii who doesn't know how to use photoshop.

Good camera expertise from a friend that do not know how Photoshop works? Pictures please!

So they had all these softboxes, modifiers and special effects equipment (like a stage) on the edge of a crater of a volcano?

Tell me another one!

I would rather wait for Bwana's comment and then believe the facts. ;)

i think this debate is getting too technical, rather than carrying a softbox and flash's etc to the volcano or having a studio "stage" setup, just photoshop the image..

I think the original poster would much prefer that route anyway?
 
You're going to have a hell of a time trying to photoshop this up versus just taking a flash with you and getting the shot in a single photo.

I'm also fairly certain National Geographic have policies against their photographers submitting photoshopped 'nature' images.

You can do this shot using two cheap halogen floodlights if you need to. Wait for a misty morning, find something (even a car could work) like a ditch behind which to place a red-filtered floodlight, then place the other floodlight with no modifier behind the person being photographed. The white balance is going to need to be adjusted since the light coming out of both light sources is going to be more yellow than they'll be white, but you should still end up with an orange lightsource from the ditch and a white-ish one from behind your model.

Here you can see a lightsource behind the subject. The strength of the effect of the silhouette is reduced from the fact that the light is hitting the lens directly as opposed to 'passing by it', which is what would have caused the stronger effect.

Here you have the moon naturally causing the effect. Street lights can do the same thing.

On the right you again have the sun naturally causing the effect.

And in this photo of mine, you have the sun naturally causing the effect.
 
The light behind him could also be the headlight from a motoribike or even a small car. Technically, the shot isn't difficult to replicate. The ambient light could certainly have been colour shifted in post.
