Each time I try and install IE7, the wizard runs for a couple minutes, then gives me the option to restart, and I get a shortcut on the desktop pointing to M$ website.... This does not occur with XP SP2 installed, only SP3. Wtf?

I've installed IE7 on a few machines with XP SP3 and never had a problem.

Take a look at the following and see if you can find anything:

Installation Errors

If you receive notification that the installation failed, you should restart your computer to ensure that any changes made during Setup are undone.

To find information about installation problems, refer to the following log files:
%windir%\ie7_main.log
%windir%\ie7.log
%windir%\ie7Uninst.log

Note: %windir% is the location of your Windows directory, which can usually be found at C:\Windows.

Ooooh, you shouldna done that. Always install IE7 BEFORE SP3!

But, I think if you go and download one of the newer IE7 installation archives from the MS website you should be OK. They fixed the installation to work on SP3. You are probably trying to install an older version of the IE7 installation archive.

I always run the update after installing sp3, but you need to do it through IE. Open IE, go to tools and then Windows update, never fails. (I have done this hundreds of times)

Ok, so after banging my head on the wall, I finally went with FF3, Whoa! What a nice browser, even better than IE8 IMO! Shot for the replies ;)

Just an update, i reloaded a machine, installed sp3, and then ran the windows update from IE6. The update installed IE8 and not IE7.
