Ping isn't related to line speed so much, it is related more to connection quality. You can have a 20Mbps LTE connection and terrible ping, which is pretty frequent on Vodacom and MTN.

There are two main things that affect ping: congestion on your network (external - you've got no control over this) and congestion on your local line (e.g. your PC downloading updates - which you can do something about).

Fiber internet has the lowest ping of all, but it's the hardest connection to find. Mobile internet has pretty erratic ping (and you'll see significant degradation during peak periods as congestion hits the network).

Soooo your options are 1) get a network monitor like GlassWire to help you determine if something on your PC is nailing your ping with unauthorised downloads (and stop those), 2) try get a better internet connection (easier said than done).

To answer your question from your other thread, a 4Mbps ADSL line will probably have more stable ping than your LTE connection (back when I had ADSL I was getting around 65ms ping - which isn't terrible). 4Mbps might not be enough for video calling though (which I presume you need as an online teacher), you'll need a 10Mbps rather to give you some headroom. These days we don't move houses based just on which is closest to work, but also which has the best internet connection :)

@Foxhound5366 thanks for the info!I’ll look for the route problem through GlassWire. So do you advise that I switch from ADSL of just stick to LTE and find the problem?

Okay I seethanks for this, feel like I have a better understanding as to what to do!

CeboKay, the best part of ADSL is you can get much cheaper data than ADSL for the same money ... I had like a 200GB WebAfrica connection on 10Mbps ADSL with 1TB of night data, it was insane. That was practically unlimited, and it was damn cheap. By contrast LTE data bundles are mostly pathetic, plus there's that ping. So yeah, it can't hurt requesting an ADSL installation. At least you get a phone line at the same time, and can get a landline number and kick it old-school at home.

Something I feel like I should warn you ... ADSL landlines are all owned and installed by Telkom. If you want to go with a different service provider like WebAfrica, Telkom still has to install your landline, then you complete a form to move it across to WebAfrica's control ... then if you ever decide to cancel it, Telkom is going to insist that WebAfrica releases control over the line back to them, and only once it returns to them do they then cancel it. I went through the whole switch-and-return-to-cancel process and it wasn't that bad, but it is just some extra hoops to jump through. Personally I'd recommend that, because Telkom's online systems are terrible and on WebAfrica I had a really nice dashboard where I could control everything.
