Starting a new job - and its a prerequisite that I become MCSE certified...

I need to do 70-410 -> 70-417...

Whats the best way to prepare?

Go through the books, summarise and do practice tests?
or do practice tests and remember the answers to them?

Also doing the same currently. Recently passed 70-410, resources used was CBT Nuggets for 2012 R2, also the Wiley book:

Oh and labs, labs, labs, they really do help.

And then lastly, to get an idea of what to expect, i ran through a couple of practice tests\dumps, actually helped to troubleshoot the questions better in the exam. (for example, they love to ask what you have to do FIRST before this and that eg powershell cmdlets for installing AD binaries and then setting up the first DC in your forest in server core).

In the exam, the hammered me with Virtualization, DNS, DHCP, IPV6 and Group Policy. Oh and lets not forget powershell :)

Take a look at techexams, a lot of threads relating to the 70- exams.

And for powershell, this actually helped:

Good luck bud, time given to complete the exam is actually more than enough.

SUPER helpful - thanks! - how long did you dedicate to studying before you went for the test?

Mmm, only reading your question properly now, remembering the answers wont help, MS changes those questions so often you will get your behind handed to you on the exam. Rather study and know the work bud.

2-3 months, after hours that is. There's really a lot of ground to cover.

yeah thats my problem.... they want me to do 70-410 - 417 in 3 months (thats like 1 exam every 2 weeks)..... and im panicking!

Well there are guys that managed to completed 70-410, 411 and 412 in 1 week. But Im sure those guys have been sysadmins for some time just to quickly pass all of that.

3 months, crap, that's short. I should complete 411 and 412 by then.

Yeah or braindumps and all that cheating shyte. Honestly I don't know why it's still such a demand when more than half the sysadmins I know cheated.

My advice would be, don't.

Rather do a Linux certification. There are less Linux professional's and the pay is better.

Additionally you don't have to put up with MS changing the GUI every few years and tons of buggy ****.

The official training kit from mspress are excellent, at least they were for the SQL server exams, for exams without training kit I watched all the relevant content on the virtual academy.

Braindumps as they call it will get you no where. It's quick to see when someone used braindumps in a real life situation, it really bite you in the a**** as you won't understand the simple concepts and/or methods.
Rather take the time prepare properly.
I do not own a MS certification, however I do have Cisco ones.
It takes me about 3-4 months to prepare for an exam. Granted that I only study after hours, Monday to Thursday only. .
So should you be studying a full 8 - 10 hours a day, it's do able.
As TheMerch88 mentioned, lab out everything. Try to re-lab it without referring to training material with just the idea in your head.

Our ops team is paid fairly well, relatively speaking. I suppose it depends who you work for...

RHCE + network cert + VMWare cert and a few years experience i'd guess you should be at 30-50k per month with a tech stack like that.

Can someone please send me a link to download the correct version of Server 2012 to download for study purposes? There are various options on the Technet website.

A future MCSE who can't figure out which ISO to download... This bodes well...

I'd go for 2012 standard or datacenter.
