How do I program the remote of my VW Citi Golf 2003?

My key's batteries went flat.
So I replaced them, but now the remote doesn't work.
Problem is I don't have a spare key anymore.
I can unlock the door with the key, but if I open the door the alarm goes on until I start the car.

If I take it to VW they are going top charge me R350 to reprogram the remote. And to buy a new key is R1500 plus the R350.

What is the sequence to get the remote into program mode.

If it is not after market then you should check the manual for reprogramming instructions. It usually involves putting the key in the ignition, while inside the car, with all the doors closed and un locked, turning the ingintion to II (accessories on) and then pressing the (lock)button on the remote. The doors should then lock and unlock to indicate the car successfully sent and got response from the remote fob.

Well it could be that or some other routine. That is the procedure for the Astra G / Corsa C by the way.

They re programmed mine for free, I watched them do it, give them the spare, they stick it into a machine then stick in the "damaged" key and voila!!

Yes, well that is if you have a spare key. Personally I think it is much better to have a car that is capable of reprogramming the key.

I found the procedure in the user-manual (duh!!!)

Unlock the car.
Switch the ignition on and then off in less than 5 seconds.
Leave the key in the ignition and hold the unlock button.
Press the lock button 3 times and release both buttons at the same time.
Do this in under 10 seconds.
The remote light will flash 5 times and the car will lock and unlock itself.

Wow - that is a complex one, I thought my Opel had a difficult one :p
But I'm glad you got it figured out - the manual is always the first place to look.

hi

i see you had trouble with your citi golf alarm awhile back, im having the same problem now. my car battery went flat and now the remote doesnt work with the car. i have tried the procedure you used and it didnt work, i dont have the manual for the car. its a 2004 model, the first model with the new dash. do you know of any other methods to sorting out the alarm? any help would be appriciated.

Gavin if the above method doesn't work the first time you might just be out of sequence slightly as these things can be a nightmare to do in the absolutely correct sequence. If you're not successful try finding someone who does have a user's manual or speak to your nearest friendly VW dealer on Tuesday :(

can this be done on a aftermarket alarm . the alarm is not the issue basically i only need a spare key programmed in order to mobilise the engin for it to start as i have not received a spare key when i bought the vehicle. vw charges 2700.00 for blank and reprogramming.

Remote Keys generally don't need to be programmed although there are some exceptions - eg if the key has a rfid tag inside.
The alarm system needs to be taught the new remote.

Look at the manual for the alarm on how to program it with a new key. If you don't have manual, you'll need to look for the alarm hardware then google for the details.

New key will need to be on the same frequency (should be 315mhz for SA), and typically same chipset as the alarm (if using rolling code style remotes). Pretty straightforward usually, especially if you have an existing key.

It could be worse, I've had to remove boards to reprogram EWS on BMW's before.

If this is beyond you, then check gumtree as there are typically plenty of 3rd party key services who can assist for much less than 2700..

actually all i need to do is program rfid chip inside the new blanks . went to volkswagen and they stated i must make an appointment for the repprogramming and have to wait 2 weeks to get an appointment. the cost for one key is 1500 and for both keys are 2050.00 i mean really 500 extra for the 2nd key where the first one cost 1500.00 .
