How to protect your cloud services from attacks

Moving to the cloud can increase efficiencies and reduce costs, but it comes with its share of security risks.

This is according to Symantec country manager for South Africa Jon Hamlet.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the 2018 MyBroadband Cloud Conference in Midrand this week, Hamlet explained that new approaches to security are required when moving to the cloud.

Hamlet added that the security of local cloud systems is dependant on them effectively responding to threats.

Step 1. Don't use Symantec.

Not a joke actually.

Symantec had a lot of false positives in the May 2018 tests by AV-Comparatives. 0.4% of blocked attacks were 'user dependent' too, which isn't good compared to rival options.

Avira stopped 100% of attacks with no false positives or user dependent actions required, making it (for what seems like the millionth time) the best performer with the only perfect score.

The mythical ESET did not perform (as usual) as well as people would have you believe. 0.9% of attacks slipped through and 3 false positives. Even Symantec is a better option than that.

Yeah I wasn't really kidding... and was referring more to their questionable record in enterprise security. Anybody remember how they handled their secure certificate business so badly that they had to sell it off to Digicert because of fatal lapses in procedures and they couldn't convince anyone they could be trusted in the future. Not the first people I'd turn to for rock solid security.
